The call

Adecco is winning the staffing war against Randstad while its own leadership plans to automate away the labor that generates its margin.

Adecco finds jobs for workers across 60 countries and handles payroll and legal paperwork that are hard to replicate, which protects its survival. But its biggest profits come from recruiting tasks like finding candidates and interviewing them, which AI tools from Microsoft, Salesforce, and startups can now do automatically. The real question is whether Adecco keeps those profits when clients use AI to do the work faster and cheaper, or whether customers demand lower prices and capture the savings themselves, leaving Adecco as just a middleman taking less money.

Why
01
AI pressure: Agentic AI recruiting tools (Salesforce Agentforce, Microsoft LinkedIn Recruiter with Copilot, direct-to-AI sourcing by enterprise clients). Management wants AI covering over half its support work by end 2026, but that is the same sourcing and screening labor clients could just buy AI access to directly. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Randstad and other staffing rivals plus enterprise HR software vendors (Workday, SAP SuccessFactors) building AI hiring layers. Adecco is currently winning share from Randstad (+365bps vs Randstad -2.5% in Q1 2026), but the fight is over shrinking margin, not growing pie. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Regulatory compliance, payroll, and worker classification across 60 countries: hard for AI-only startups to replicate quickly.
