The call

Affirm just turned its first GAAP profit, but it sells a loan that AI checkout agents and shoppers alike now treat as one of three near-identical options.

Affirm lends money to shoppers at checkout so they can buy things in installments instead of paying all at once. It is getting harder to stay ahead because Klarna, PayPal Pay Later, and Afterpay all do basically the same thing with similar technology and reach the same customers, so stores are using multiple companies at once (74% use more than one). The big question is whether new AI shopping assistants like Google's will pick Affirm automatically or treat it the same as Klarna and PayPal, which would make price competition even fiercer and eliminate any advantage Affirm built.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google Gemini / AI Mode checkout agents, Stripe universal commerce. AI shopping agents list Affirm next to Klarna and PayPal as interchangeable options, letting price and approval odds decide, not brand. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Klarna and PayPal Pay Later. Klarna and PayPal now sit near market parity with Affirm and took Walmart's business in 2025, proving merchants will switch. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Exclusive placement deals with Shopify and Amazon, plus regulatory licensing that AI agents and new entrants still have to clear.
What would change this call
Shopify exclusivity renewal terms and whether Amazon renews around 2030. Would show whether Affirm's key merchant distribution is contestable or locked in.
FDIC decision on Affirm Bank charter. Would show if Affirm gains a structural funding-cost edge over Klarna/PayPal.
Whether Google Gemini/AI checkout agents default to Affirm or list it alongside Klarna/PayPal. Would show if AI-driven checkout is commoditizing BNPL brand distinction.

Questions people ask
Is Affirm profitable in 2026?
Yes. Affirm reported its first GAAP operating profitability as a public company in Q3 FY2026 (reported May 7, 2026), with revenue of $1.04 billion, up 33% year over year, and adjusted operating income of $281 million, up 62% year over year.
Who is Affirm's biggest competitor?
Klarna is Affirm's closest rival, holding 44% US BNPL market share versus Affirm's 45% as of a May 2026 PYMNTS survey published July 20, 2026. Klarna also won Walmart's BNPL partnership away from Affirm in 2025, showing merchant relationships are contestable.
Could AI replace Affirm?
Not directly. AI agents like Google Gemini and Stripe checkout flows cannot originate credit themselves, so a licensed lender like Affirm stays necessary. But as of May 12, 2026, Google's AI Mode lists Affirm and Klarna interchangeably, eroding Affirm's pricing power at checkout.
Is Affirm a safe company to join right now?
Affirm shows growing headcount (roughly 3,100 employees per LinkedIn tracking as of June 2026, per company-linked profiles) and revenue growth, but faces high leverage concerns flagged mid-July 2026 and regulatory uncertainty around its pending FDIC bank charter application filed January 23, 2026.
Does Affirm own a bank?
Not yet. Affirm applied to Nevada's Financial Institutions Division and the FDIC in January 2026 to charter 'Affirm Bank,' an industrial loan company meant to cut funding costs, but the National Community Reinvestment Coalition formally opposed the FDIC application on February 27, 2026.
How big is Affirm's BNPL market share?
Affirm held 45% market share in a PYMNTS survey published July 20, 2026, narrowly ahead of Klarna and PayPal Pay Later at 44% each and Afterpay at 42%, with 74% of BNPL users reporting they use more than one provider.
