Afterpay
Afterpay is a buy-now-pay-later lender owned by Block, built into Cash App checkout.
Afterpay leads pay-in-4 by share and sits inside Cash App's user base, while Visa and Mastercard now offer installment plans at the point of sale too.
Afterpay lets customers split purchases into four payments instead of paying upfront. It makes about $1 billion in profit yearly and has about 38 percent of the US buy-now-pay-later market. It is hard to copy because it has special data about how customers shop, government lending licenses, and direct access to Block's Cash App which has 58 million monthly users. However, Visa and Mastercard have already launched their own installment payment tools, and the top four buy-now-pay-later companies now have nearly equal market share (42 to 45 percent each), which means the advantage is shrinking. The key thing to watch is whether Block's big cost cuts in early 2026 actually work to improve profits, and whether Visa and Mastercard steal more customers away during the rest of 2026.

- Is Afterpay profitable in 2026?
- Afterpay is not broken out as a standalone public entity, but its parent segment shows strength: Cash App gross profit grew 38% YoY to $1.91B in Q1 2026, with consumer lending originations up 82% to $17.6B, per a July 9, 2026 Zacks report.
- Who owns Afterpay?
- Afterpay has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Block, Inc. (NYSE: XYZ, ASX: SQ2) since a ~$29 billion all stock acquisition closed in early 2022. Block's market cap was about $47.6 billion as of July 21, 2026.
- Could AI replace Afterpay?
- Unlikely to fully replace it. Afterpay's underwriting is automatable and now feeds AI agentic commerce via Block's UCP integration (Feb 4, 2026), but its Cash App transaction data, merchant network, and lending licenses form a moat AI alone cannot replicate.
- Who is Afterpay's biggest competitor?
- In the US pay in 4 segment Afterpay leads with 38% share as of June 4, 2026 per the NY Fed, but globally Klarna leads with about 19% share (May 31, 2026), and Visa and Mastercard have shipped rival installment rails.
- Did Afterpay's layoffs hurt Block's business?
- Investors reacted positively: Block shares rose as much as 24% after the February 26, 2026 layoff and AI announcement, and Block raised 2026 guidance to $12.33B gross profit and $3.85 adjusted EPS, up 62% YoY.
- Is Afterpay's market share shrinking?
- Consumer usage share among the top four BNPL providers has converged to 42-45% as of July 13, 2026 (PYMNTS), meaning Afterpay's lead over Affirm, Klarna and PayPal in usage is now essentially a four way tie.
