The call

Aleph Alpha stopped competing on frontier models years ago and is now being folded into Cohere at 10% ownership, its survival as a distinct brand undecided until regulators and Schwarz Group money settle in late 2026.

Aleph Alpha built large language models for businesses to use instead of relying on OpenAI or other U.S. companies. The company is no longer independent: Cohere is buying it at a price about 25% lower than its peak value, the founder left, and layoffs happened. Mistral AI, another European company with similar products, has grown much faster and now leads the market Aleph was targeting, while OpenAI and Google's models have become so cheap and good that specialized European options struggle to compete. The biggest question is whether Aleph Alpha will survive as its own unit inside Cohere or get absorbed completely within the next year or two.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google. These labs commoditized the frontier model race Aleph Alpha once tried to run, forcing it into a cut-price enterprise pivot. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Mistral AI. Mistral took the same sovereign-AI, enterprise-and-government pitch and turned it into $400M+ ARR and an €11.7B valuation, leaving Aleph Alpha third-tier. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. German government relationships and an EU sovereignty narrative that Schwarz Group and Berlin still want to fund.

EC issues its decision on the Cohere-Aleph Alpha merger, expected late 2026. Shows whether regulators allow the deal to close as structured or impose conditions.
Whether Schwarz Group's €500M commitment converts into signed, P&L-visible multi-year purchase orders. Shows if the anchor customer relationship is real revenue or a paper commitment.
Whether the 'Aleph Alpha' brand and P&L unit still exists as a distinct entity inside Cohere after 12-18 months. Shows if Aleph survives as an identifiable business or is absorbed away.

Questions people ask
Is Aleph Alpha profitable?
No. German public filings show Aleph Alpha had not reached even one million euros in turnover in 2023, alongside an 18.9 million euro loss that year, despite years of large funding rounds, as of July 2026 reporting.
Who owns Aleph Alpha now?
Canada's Cohere announced on April 24, 2026 that it would acquire Aleph Alpha in a deal structured as a merger, with Cohere shareholders taking about 90 percent and Aleph Alpha shareholders about 10 percent of the combined entity.
Is Aleph Alpha being acquired?
Yes. Cohere announced the acquisition on April 24, 2026, backed by a 600 million dollar Schwarz Group financing commitment, at a combined valuation of roughly 20 billion dollars, pending European Commission review expected by late 2026.
Did Aleph Alpha lay off employees?
Yes. Aleph Alpha cut approximately 50 jobs, about a 17 percent workforce reduction, in its first major restructuring announced January 13, 2026, months before the Cohere acquisition was announced.
Who is Aleph Alpha's biggest competitor?
Mistral AI, the French sovereign-AI lab, is the dominant rival: its ARR surged from about 16 million to over 400 million dollars in the year to January 2026 at an 11.7 billion euro valuation, dwarfing Aleph Alpha's sub-1-million-euro 2023 revenue.
Could AI replace Aleph Alpha's own business?
Aleph Alpha's founder Jonas Andrulis conceded in a December 2025 Handelsblatt interview that no European company can build a frontier model in isolation, which is why the company deprecated its Luminous API and pivoted to the enterprise-deployment layer PhariaAI.
