The call

Allen still leads Indian classroom coaching, but shrinking Kota enrollment, thinning profit, and a fast-rising rival press on its position.

Allen Career Institute teaches students in India how to pass tough entrance exams, mainly at its famous Kota study centers. It is hard to replace because it has built a strong reputation over decades and has physical classrooms in the right locations, but Physics Wallah, a newer competitor that just went public, is growing much faster with online classes and is now taking Allen's students away. The real question is whether Allen can make enough money from its new digital classes and online courses to replace what it is losing in its traditional classroom business before it runs out of time and investor patience.

Why
01
AI pressure: Free AI tutoring tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini offering personalized problem-solving. AI chatbots now solve JEE/NEET problems step by step for free, threatening the paid-coaching model Allen depends on. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Physics Wallah. Physics Wallah, now public at a $5B valuation and growing 49%, is pulling students from Allen's Kota and online segments. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Allen's decades-old brand, topper track record, and 300+ campus network still draw offline students despite cheaper rivals.
What would change this call
Allen FY26 results (due late 2026) show digital segment profit or continued loss. Reveals whether the costly digital pivot is finally offsetting Kota's decline.
Physics Wallah opens offline centres in Kota or other Allen stronghold cities. Would show PW directly attacking Allen's core physical-campus advantage.
Allen's Mumbai IPO (under exploration April 2026) proceeds or is shelved. Proceeding signals confidence and capital access; shelving signals weakness or poor investor demand.

Questions people ask
Is Allen Career Institute profitable in 2025?
Yes but shrinking fast. Allen's FY25 net profit collapsed about 70% to Rs 41 crore from Rs 135.9 crore in FY24, on operating revenue of Rs 3,067 crore, with the CEO citing heavy digital investment and a strategic shift away from Kota, as of October 20, 2025.
Who owns Allen Career Institute?
Bodhi Tree Systems, a venture backed by James Murdoch's Lupa Systems, Uday Shankar, and the Qatar Investment Authority, invested $600 million for a 36% stake in Allen in a deal that closed July 1, 2022, valuing the company at roughly $1.2 billion. The Maheshwari founding family retains majority control.
Is Allen Career Institute's Kota business shrinking?
Yes. Kota enrolments fell from about 131,000 in 2023 to roughly 90,000 in FY25, a 35 to 40% drop from peak, and Kota's share of Allen's revenue fell from about 36% to 25% over FY25, according to a September 3, 2025 report.
Who is Allen Career Institute's biggest competitor?
Physics Wallah, which IPO'd on November 18, 2025 at a market cap near $5 billion after its shares closed 44% above issue price. Physics Wallah's FY25 revenue grew 49% to about $326 million with 4.5 million paying subscribers, outpacing Allen's flat, declining-profit trajectory.
Has Allen Career Institute had layoffs?
Yes. In December 2024 Allen laid off 200-plus employees with a reported target of cutting total staff from 12,500 to 10,000, following mid-2024 pay cuts of 20-40% for over 4,000 faculty and admin staff amid a 35-40% enrolment slump.
Could AI replace Allen Career Institute's tutors?
Unlikely to fully replace in-person mentorship across Allen's 300-plus campuses and residential hostel ecosystem, but AI is already displacing lower-margin functions: Allen acquired AI doubt-solving platform Doubtnut for about $10 million in December 2023 and has cut sales and admin headcount since.
