The call

Angel One stays profitable and licensed but keeps losing active traders to Groww while regulators squeeze its F&O-heavy revenue base.

Angel One is a licensed stock-trading platform in India where regular people buy and sell stocks with low fees. It makes most of its money from derivatives trading (bets on price movements), but new government rules are limiting how much money traders can make there, and a faster rival called Groww is attracting more customers away from Angel One. The company is unlikely to disappear because it has a government license that AI cannot easily replicate, but whether it can stay competitive depends on whether it can replace lost derivative profits with other businesses like investment advisory and insurance before losing too many more customers to Groww.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI trading app has taken its clients yet, but AI-driven robo-advisors could commoditize broking over time. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Groww. Groww's active NSE client share hit 28.7% versus Angel One's 14.7%, pulling users away quarter after quarter. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. SEBI broker license, 38.9 million registered clients, and growing wealth, AMC and insurance arms cushion the F&O hit.
What would change this call
Angel One's active NSE client share vs Groww each quarter through 2026. Whether Angel One's client losses to Groww are stabilizing or continuing to worsen.
Angel One's Q2 FY27 earnings release on 21 October 2026. Whether margin compression from 44.6% to 36.6% normalizes or deepens further.
Angel One's non-broking revenue share (wealth, AMC, insurance, lending) trend toward 40-50% of gross revenue. Whether diversification away from F&O broking is scaling fast enough to offset regulatory pressure.
Key numbers
  • Active NSE clients fell to 6.63M, 14.7% share (2026-06-30)
  • Groww holds 28.7% NSE active client share (2026-06-30)
  • Broking revenue down to 60.1% of gross revenue (2026-06-30)
Named risks
  • Continued active NSE client erosion versus Groww's growing dominance could pressure turnover-based revenue. Severity: high
  • F&O revenue concentration (historically ~77% of broking revenue) remains exposed to further SEBI derivatives curbs. Severity: high
  • New SEBI Closing Auction Session effective August 3, 2026 changes trading mechanics for F&O stocks. Severity: medium
  • Repeated SEBI settlements (November 2025 and June 2026) signal ongoing regulatory and compliance friction. Severity: medium
  • Diversification into insurance JV and AMC still small relative to core broking, execution risk on scaling. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Angel One in financial trouble?
Not in the sense of insolvency: Q1 FY27 gross revenue reached ₹1,430 crore, up 25.4% year on year, as of June 30, 2026. The concern is margin and client erosion rather than a cash crisis, since EBITDA margin slipped to 33.9% from 41% in the prior quarter while active NSE clients fell from 75.77 lakh to 67.62 lakh over FY26.
Who are Angel One's biggest competitors?
Groww is the main threat, having overtaken Angel One in active NSE clients and market cap after its November 2025 IPO. Zerodha and Upstox remain ahead of or near Angel One despite losing clients themselves, while smaller challenger Dhan is adding net clients even as Angel One's base shrinks, as of the July 2026 assessment.
Is Angel One at risk from AI?
No AI-native trading rival has been named as a direct threat to Angel One as of the July 2026 assessment, so the risk is rated distant. The longer-term concern is that robo-advisory tools could squeeze brokerage fees industry-wide, but this is a watch-item rather than a current pressure point.
Is Angel One losing market share to rivals?
Yes, active NSE clients fell from 75.77 lakh in FY25 to 67.62 lakh as of March 31, 2026, with a further net loss of 50,390 clients in June 2026 alone. Angel One trails Zerodha in client retention and has lost the client-count race outright to Groww, which overtook it in active NSE client share after its November 2025 IPO, as of the July 2026 assessment.
Could a bigger company copy Angel One's business model?
It is rated possible but not likely. Angel One's main protection is its SEBI broker license plus demat and KYC lock-in, which makes switching brokers slow for existing users, but that edge is eroding as platforms like Groww compete on cost and user experience, as of the July 2026 assessment.
