The call

Canada's permit caps stalled its growth, ChatGPT now sits in front of student discovery, and IDP Education chases the same schools with no wall between them.

ApplyBoard is a marketplace that connects international students with universities and makes money from commissions when students enroll. It is not hard to copy or replace because a bigger competitor called IDP Education does almost exactly the same thing in the same markets, and now ChatGPT lets students find universities on their own without needing ApplyBoard at all. ChatGPT started integrating university search in June 2026, which means students can get recommendations directly from OpenAI instead of from ApplyBoard. The company has watched its revenue flatten since 2022, its value drop by more than three-quarters, and its staff cut by nearly half, mostly because Canada stopped issuing as many study permits, and students are turning to AI instead. The one thing that could save it is if ApplyBoard can turn its compliance-checking product (ApplyProof) into something universities and governments want to buy separately, which would give it a real reason to exist that AI cannot easily replace.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI ChatGPT. ChatGPT's June 2026 study-abroad integration now handles school discovery and matching, routing students before ApplyBoard sees them. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: IDP Education. IDP Education runs the same commission marketplace at $658M revenue, with nothing stopping it from chasing the same students and schools. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Its network of 1,500+ partner institutions and the ApplyProof compliance tool give agents a reason to keep routing applications through it.

Whether ApplyBoard reports non-Canada revenue growth in upcoming quarterly disclosures. Would show diversification is offsetting Canadian policy losses.
Fidelity's next fund disclosure on its ApplyBoard stake valuation. Would confirm or reverse the reported 78-80% markdown from 2021 peak.
Whether ApplyBoard headcount stabilizes or continues falling below 1,116. Would show whether cost-cutting has ended or business is still contracting.

Questions people ask
Is ApplyBoard profitable and growing in 2026?
No clear growth: The Logic reported June 2026 that 2025 revenue was roughly $200M, flat versus 2024, with growth essentially stalled since 2022 due to collapsing Canadian international-student volumes tied to permit caps.
Has ApplyBoard had layoffs?
Yes, three rounds: about 6% of ~1,500 staff in November 2022, about 4% of global staff (mostly Ontario) in September 2024, and 150+ employees in June 2025. Headcount fell from 2,050 in 2023 to 1,116 by Q4 2025, a 45.6% cumulative decline.
Could AI replace ApplyBoard's core service?
Its discovery/advising layer is exposed: EAB data shows student use of AI for university research jumped from 26% to 46% in 2025 alone. ApplyBoard responded by integrating into ChatGPT on June 10, 2026, effectively ceding discovery ranking to OpenAI's platform.
Who is ApplyBoard's biggest competitor?
IDP Education, an ASX-listed incumbent with about $658.5M revenue and roughly 8,000 employees, operates the same commission-marketplace model at larger scale with no structural barrier keeping it out of ApplyBoard's segments, per RocketReach competitor data.
Who owns ApplyBoard?
ApplyBoard is privately held and venture-backed. Its last priced round was a $300M Series D in June 2021 at a $3.2B valuation led by Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, with Fidelity, BDC, Harmonic and Index Ventures also participating.
Is ApplyBoard going public soon?
No. The Logic reported June 10, 2026 that ApplyBoard had targeted a 2026 IPO, but Canadian immigration policy changes derailed those plans according to multiple former senior staff.
