The call

Arvato keeps growing inside a stable parent, but nothing stops DHL or GXO from taking its next brand deal on price or automation alone.

Arvato runs warehouses and delivers packages for fashion and tech brands like Douglas and Montblanc. It is not hard to copy or replace because giant competitors like DHL Supply Chain and GXO Logistics already do the same work with more warehouses and staff, so Arvato has to stay excellent at daily operations to keep customers happy. The big question mark is whether Arvato's parent company Bertelsmann will keep it intact or break it apart and sell pieces (as it has done with other divisions since 2018), since constant reorganization can distract from the work needed to compete.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-driven warehouse robotics (Amazon Robotics, DHL's automation stack). Cheaper AI-run robotics let big shippers or clients automate fulfillment in-house, cutting the need for an outsourced partner like Arvato. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: DHL Supply Chain and GXO Logistics. DHL runs about 1,300 warehouses and 188k staff, GXO posts $11.7bn revenue, both bidding for the same DACH brand contracts. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Long-tenured logos like Telekom (10+ years) and deep operational integration make switching costly for clients even without a formal moat.
What would change this call
Bertelsmann announces a strategic review of the Arvato supply-chain unit. Would signal parent doubts core division's standalone value, echoing past Riverty/CRM divestitures.
Douglas, Telekom, or Montblanc contract is not renewed or shifts to DHL/GXO. Would show a named rival directly displacing Arvato on a flagship account.
H1 2026 Bertelsmann results (~Aug 2026) show organic growth below FY2025's 9.4%. Would indicate momentum reversing and competitive pressure increasing.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue €4.378bn (2025-12-31)
  • 9.4% organic growth FY2025 (2025-12-31)
  • €720m adjusted EBITDA FY2025 (2025-12-31)
Named risks
  • Bertelsmann's decade-long pattern of Arvato carve-outs (Riverty 2020-22, CRM review since 2018, Vidispine Jan 2025) could extend to core supply-chain unit. Severity: medium
  • No structural moat against DHL Supply Chain or GXO bidding the same premium-brand RFPs. Severity: high
  • Reputational overhang from 2023 Times investigation into Riverty's debt-collection practices for British Gas. Severity: medium
  • Warehouse labor roles exposed to displacement as Arvato scales robotics toward 10,000 deployments by 2030. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Arvato profitable in 2025?
Yes. Bertelsmann's FY2025 annual report lists Arvato Group revenue of €4.378 billion with adjusted operating EBITDA of €720 million and 9.4% organic growth versus the prior year's €3.9 billion, as of 2025-12-31.
Who owns Arvato?
Arvato is wholly owned by Bertelsmann SE & Co. KGaA, the private German media and services conglomerate, and operates in more than 30 countries as of the company's own current profile.
Could AI or robots replace Arvato's warehouse jobs?
Physical fulfillment resists pure AI replacement, but Arvato is automating aggressively: its in-house Leleka robotic arm went live at Hanover in mid-2024, it partnered with Unchained Robotics in March 2026, and it targets 10,000 robotics deployments by 2030.
Is DHL or GXO a bigger threat to Arvato?
Both dwarf Arvato in scale: GXO Logistics reported $11.7bn revenue and 105,000 employees in a 2025 industry ranking, while DHL Supply Chain is estimated at roughly 1,300 warehouses and 188,000 staff, versus Arvato's €4.378bn FY2025 revenue.
What happened to Arvato Financial Solutions?
Arvato Financial Solutions rebranded to Riverty effective 2022-08-07 and now operates as a separate Bertelsmann brand with roughly 5,000 employees across 13 countries, reported in a 2023 profile.
Has Arvato had layoffs?
Group headcount fell from 72,457 in FY2015 to 28,320 in FY2025, but this reflects Bertelsmann carving out the CRM and financial-services units into separate brands (Riverty, Arvato Connect) rather than pure attrition in the supply-chain business.
