The call

Asian Paints still leads India's paint market, but Birla Opus and JSW-Akzo are cutting into that lead while regulators examine how the dealer network holds it together.

Asian Paints makes and sells paint across India through a huge network of 146,000 dealers and 27 factories, built over 80 years. The company is being challenged by Birla Opus (launched in early 2024) and JSW-Akzo's Dulux brand, which are both opening their own dealer networks and stealing customers faster than the market is growing. At the same time, India's competition regulator is investigating whether Asian Paints unfairly locks dealers into selling only their products, and a ruling in the next six months could force the company to let dealers work with rivals. The real test will be whether Asian Paints can keep growing even if it loses exclusive dealer agreements, and whether Birla Opus can keep gaining share as fast as it has been doing.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI color-matching and design apps help shoppers pick shades but don't replace the paint or dealer network Asian Paints runs. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Birla Opus (Aditya Birla Group / Grasim). Birla Opus's fast depot and tinting-machine rollout has already pulled Asian Paints' decorative share from ~59% to ~47-52% in two years. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 27 plants, about 146,000 dealer touchpoints, and an 80-year brand make its distribution hard to copy quickly.

Questions people ask
Is Asian Paints profitable in 2026?
Yes. For FY26 (year ended 31 March 2026) Asian Paints posted consolidated net profit of Rs 4,325.35 crore, up 18% year on year, on revenue of Rs 35,583.54 crore, per results reported 2026-05-29.
Is Asian Paints losing market share to Birla Opus?
Yes, materially. Asian Paints' domestic decorative paint share fell from roughly 59% to about 47-52% between FY24 and FY26 as Aditya Birla Group's Birla Opus, launched Feb 2024, scaled to 137 depots and became India's #3 decorative brand by FY25.
Who owns Asian Paints?
Asian Paints is publicly listed with no parent company. The founding-family Promoter Group (Choksi, Dani and Vakil families) holds about 52.6% as of shareholding filings through September 2025; institutional and public investors hold the remainder.
Could AI replace Asian Paints' painting business?
Unlikely for the core business. AI is automating front-end shade-visualizer tools (Asian Paints' 'One Visualizer', updated Feb 2026) shared across the industry, but physical manufacturing, ~146,000 dealer touchpoints, and labor-applied painting services remain outside AI's reach as of 2026.
Is Asian Paints under antitrust investigation?
Yes. India's Competition Commission ordered a fresh formal probe (Case No. 32/2024) on 1 July 2025 over alleged dealer-exclusivity coercion, after a Birla Opus complaint. The Bombay High Court and Supreme Court both declined to block the probe, by October 2025.
Who is Asian Paints' biggest competitor?
Birla Opus (Aditya Birla Group/Grasim), launched Feb 2024, is the fastest-growing threat, reaching #3 brand status with 137 depots and about 45,000 tinting machines by FY25. Berger Paints remains the long-standing #2 with roughly 20-21% share as of August 2025.
