The call

Aspire enters 2026 profitable and licensed across five regions, but it is funding a global push on a three-year-old equity round while fintech peers with fuller licensing already operate in its home markets.

Aspire is a company that gives small business owners banking services like accounts, payments, and spending tools across multiple countries. It's hard for regular banks like DBS or OCBC to compete because of banking rules, but other new fintech companies like Airwallex are already doing the same thing and growing fast in the same places. The biggest question is whether Aspire can expand globally while staying profitable and keeping customers as these rivals get bigger and governments give them more approvals.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-native spend and expense agents from Ramp and Brex. Ramp and Brex already run AI agents for expense and treasury work, a model Aspire will meet head-on as it pushes into the US market. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Airwallex. Airwallex runs the same Singapore and Hong Kong SME corridors with broader licensing coverage, competing live rather than from the sidelines. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Multi-jurisdiction licenses (Singapore MPI, Australia AFSL, EU EMI, US MSB/SEC RIA, HK SFC), DBS custody, and profitability since Q2 2023 back a 50,000-customer base.
What would change this call
Aspire announces a Series D or new equity round within 12 months. Would confirm financial health and funding to sustain global expansion.
Airwallex secures full Singapore MPI license or new funding round. Would show the unbarred rival extending its regulatory and capital lead.
Aspire names bank customers signed onto AspireOS within a year. Would validate the infrastructure-licensing thesis behind its moat.

Questions people ask
Is Aspire profitable in 2026?
Aspire (aspireapp.com) says it reached profitability in Q2 2023, tripling annual revenue year over year and hitting $15B in annualized total payment volume, per company statements reported by fintechfutures.com on 2025-03-29. No audited figures have surfaced since, and no new equity round has closed since Feb 2023.
Who owns Aspire the fintech company?
Aspire is privately held and venture-backed, with investors including Peak XV (formerly Sequoia SEA), Lightspeed, Y Combinator, PayPal Ventures, Tencent and LGT Capital Partners. Its last funding round was a $100M Series C in February 2023, with total raised around $299.5M as of April 2026 per caplight.com.
Is Airwallex a bigger threat to Aspire than banks?
Yes. Airwallex, an unbarred fintech peer, holds fuller Singapore MAS licensing than Aspire, which as of 2026 still operates on an in-principle Major Payment Institution approval, per airwallex.com's own 2026-07-12 comparison. Traditional banks like DBS remain structurally blocked from the SME segment Aspire and Airwallex both serve.
Could AI replace what Aspire does for SMEs?
AI can replicate Aspire's commodity workflows like expense categorization, receipt OCR, and month-end close, which Aspire itself automated via Aspire AI in June 2024. But its regulated licenses (Singapore MPI, EU EMI, US MSB/SEC RIA, Hong Kong SFC) and DBS custody arrangement can't be replicated by a pure AI layer.
Has Aspire raised new funding since 2023?
No. Aspire's last disclosed equity round was a $100M Series C in February 2023 led by Lightspeed and Sequoia Capital SEA. As of April 2026, caplight.com reports no new equity round in over three years, with total funding to date around $299.5M.
Did Aspire actually launch in the United States?
Yes, Aspire officially launched in the US in April 2026, supporting 16 currencies and backed by over 10 international licenses across Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, Europe, the US and Canada, per its April 7, 2026 press release, entering a market already held by Mercury, Brex and Ramp.
