The call

Primark's stores still make money and dominate physical fast fashion, but Shein and Temu are eating into Europe while the company splits itself apart.

Primark runs 473 stores across Europe and beyond, selling cheap clothing and goods by buying in huge volume and keeping stores lean. For years, this was hard to beat because Shein and Temu did not have the physical footprint. Now those companies are selling even cheaper online using a tax loophole that lets them avoid fees on small packages, and European shoppers are buying from them instead, Primark's sales in Europe fell 5.6% in the first half of 2026. Primark is also splitting off from its parent company by end of 2027, which means management has to fight this battle while reorganizing. The key thing to watch is whether Europe's sales keep dropping and Shein and Temu keep growing after 2027, because if so, investors will worry that online discount rivals have genuinely taken away Primark's customers for good.

Why
01
AI pressure: Shein and Temu's AI-driven pricing and recommendation engines. Their algorithmic pricing and endless online range are pulling European shoppers away from Primark stores right now. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Inditex (Zara) and H&M. Both run bigger, faster fashion machines online and in stores, but Primark mostly avoids them by staying cheaper and store-only. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 473+ stores covering 19.5m sq ft give Primark low-cost sourcing scale that pure online rivals cannot easily replicate.
What would change this call
Primark's annual results on 3 November 2026 show Europe LFL trend. Whether Shein/Temu-driven decline is stabilizing or deepening.
EU or UK closes the de minimis tax loophole on a fixed date. Would remove a key price advantage Shein and Temu use to undercut Primark.
Primark's inventory markdown levels in 2026-2027 disclosures. Whether heavy discounting to compete with fast-fashion online rivals keeps eroding margin.

Questions people ask
Is Primark profitable in 2026?
Yes. Primark's Retail segment posted FY2025 operating profit of £1.126bn on £9.489bn revenue, an 11.9% margin, up 2% year on year, per ABF's 2025-11-04 results. H1 2026 group profit fell to £445m from £520m as European sales weakened.
Is Associated British Foods splitting off Primark?
Yes. ABF's board confirmed on 2026-04-21 it will fully demerge Primark into a standalone London-listed company led by CEO Eoin Tonge, with the food business retaining the ABF name under George Weston. Completion is targeted by end of 2027.
Who owns Associated British Foods?
Associated British Foods is publicly listed on the LSE (ticker ABF) as a FTSE 100 constituent, with Wittington Investments Limited, the Weston family's holding vehicle, as majority shareholder. Wittington has said it intends to remain majority owner of both post-demerger entities, per ABF's 2026-04-21 announcement.
Is Primark losing customers to Shein and Temu?
Bloomberg reported on 2026-02-20 that Primark faces intensifying pressure from Shein and Temu. ABF's own H1 2026 results (2026-04-20) showed European like-for-like sales down 5.6%, even as UK like-for-like rose 1.3% and US sales grew about 14% year to date.
Could AI replace Primark's business model?
Unlikely to replace it directly. Primark's moat is physical: 473 to 486 stores, 19.5m sq ft of selling space, and low-cost sourcing, with no transactional e-commerce as of 2026-03-12. AI is being explored for markdown and demand forecasting, an internal weakness flagged in its 2026-01-07 trading update, not as a substitute for stores.
Is it a good time to join Primark or ABF?
Mixed signal. Primark is expanding in the US (sales up about 14% year to date as of 2026-04-20) and headcount reached roughly 82,600 in FY2025, but the company is mid-demerger through end-2027 and had a CEO scandal in March 2025 when Paul Marchant resigned after a behaviour complaint.
