The call

After selling off its testing and counselling units for a token sum, ATA is left running a shrinking art-coaching business with falling margins and no clear answer to cheaper local rivals or free AI feedback tools.

ATA Inc. used to run testing and college counseling services in China, but sold most of that off in mid-2026. Now it mainly teaches students how to build art portfolios for college applications. Local Chinese competitors and AI chatbots that give instant design feedback and essay help are making it harder for the company to charge premium prices or stand out. The company's profit margins are falling fast, it is losing money overall, and its stock is at risk of being removed from the Nasdaq exchange. The one thing that could matter: if management explains in the next few earnings reports how it plans to defend against AI tools doing similar work, or if the bleeding stops, the picture could shift, but right now neither is happening.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI design-feedback and essay tools (ChatGPT, Midjourney-based coaching apps). AI already gives free portfolio critiques and application essay help, squeezing the paid-coaching model ATA sells. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Fragmented local Chinese portfolio-training studios. Local rivals in the same 18 cities are undercutting price and taking share, pushing gross margin from 52.7% to 48.6% in a year. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A 25-year-old brand name and 19 physical training centers, but no exclusive school pipeline or technology to stop copying.

Questions people ask
Is ATA Creativity Global (AACG) profitable in 2026?
No. FY2025 revenue was flat at RMB268.1 million with Q4 2025 down 11.7% YoY to RMB89.1 million, gross margin fell to 48.6% from 52.7%, and the company recorded a Q4 2025 impairment charge, per its March 25, 2026 results release.
Does ATA Inc. still run computer-based testing centers?
No. On June 30, 2026, ATA Creativity Global sold its remaining testing subsidiary, ATA Testing Authority (Holdings) Limited, and its 69.04% stake in Beijing Huanqiuyimeng, to Robox Holding Limited for a nominal RMB1, exiting the original testing business entirely.
Is ATA Creativity Global at risk of Nasdaq delisting?
It has a recent compliance history of trouble: Nasdaq flagged a minimum bid price violation in May 2024 (resolved by November 2024) and a separate stockholders'-equity deficiency notice on November 27, 2024, with shares still trading near or below $1 through 2026.
Could AI replace ATA Creativity Global's portfolio-training and study-counselling services?
Generative AI essay assistants, design-feedback tools and program-matching chatbots could commoditize parts of ATA Creativity Global's advisory work; its investor decks from August 2025 through April 2026 show zero mentions of any AI strategy or product.
Who are ATA Creativity Global's biggest competitors?
The company itself describes its portfolio-training market as 'highly fragmented' with 'intense local competition' from regional Chinese art-portfolio training providers, which its own March 25, 2026 disclosures cite as the direct cause of ongoing gross margin erosion.
What happened to the original ATA Inc. ticker ATAI?
ATA Inc. renamed to ATA Creativity Global and switched to ticker AACG in September 2019; the vacated ATAI ticker was later adopted by an unrelated biotech, AtaiBeckley Inc., which is a completely different company.
