The call

Avid still holds the top film editing rooms, but it is shrinking, privately owned by STG since 2023, and racing to ship AI features before DaVinci Resolve eats the middle of its market.

Avid Technology makes Pro Tools (for sound) and Media Composer (for video editing), the tools that have dominated high-end movie and TV post-production for decades. It is hard to replace because film studios, sound stages, and post-production houses have built entire workflows around Avid's tools, trained their staff on them, and integrated them into their pipelines, which creates real switching costs. However, Avid is shrinking: the company has laid off workers, is posting fewer job openings, and its revenue numbers are now hidden because it is owned by a private equity firm as of late 2023. DaVinci Resolve, made by Blackmagic Design, is chipping away at Avid's lead by offering a free version and bundling it with hardware, and estimates suggest Resolve now handles roughly 15% of professional video editing work versus Avid's 10%, a major shift. The one thing that could turn things around is if Avid's new artificial intelligence features (built with Google Cloud) actually get used by real studios and speed up their work enough to justify staying loyal, but as of mid-2026 these tools are still in beta testing and not yet in widespread use.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google Gemini inside Avid Content Core. Avid is bolting Gemini into its own tools rather than being replaced by them, but the feature is still in tech preview, not shipped. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Blackmagic Design's DaVinci Resolve. Free software bundled with cheap cameras is pulling mid-tier editors away, with third-party estimates putting Resolve near 15% share versus Avid's 10%. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Top film and TV production pipelines are built around Pro Tools and Media Composer file formats, plugins, and crews trained on them for decades.

Questions people ask
Is Avid Technology still a public company?
No. Avid Technology was taken private by Symphony Technology Group (STG) in an all-cash deal worth about $1.4 billion, closing November 7, 2023, with shareholders paid $27.05 per share; it has filed no public financials since.
Is Avid Technology profitable in 2026?
Unclear. Avid stopped disclosing financials after going private in November 2023. Third-party vendor estimates conflict, ranging from about $294M (ZoomInfo, 2026) to $380M (PrivCo, 2024), so no verified profitability figure exists as of mid-2026.
Could AI replace Avid's Pro Tools and Media Composer?
AI is automating exposed tasks like transcription, logging, and rough cuts, but Avid's session-file standards and AAX/HDX hardware ecosystem remain entrenched infrastructure in top studios. Avid itself is adding Gemini-based AI via its April 2026 Google Cloud partnership rather than being replaced.
Is Avid Technology laying people off?
Avid has shed headcount steadily under PE ownership: employees fell from 2,568 in 2023 to 2,045 by December 2025, a 20.3% drop, with job postings down 26.6% year-over-year in 2025, per Revelio Labs data published June 2026.
Who is Avid Technology's biggest competitor?
DaVinci Resolve from Blackmagic Design is the fastest-rising rival, offered free and bundled with Blackmagic hardware, while Adobe Premiere Pro and Apple Final Cut Pro remain the larger incumbents in the broader video-editing software market as of June 2026.
Who owns Avid Technology now?
Avid Technology has been owned by private equity firm Symphony Technology Group (STG) since it completed a $1.4 billion take-private acquisition on November 7, 2023, with co-investors Kortschak Investments and Brock LINC also holding stakes.
