The call

Babbel still runs a real subscription and B2B business, but its consumer side is being squeezed by free AI voice tools and a faster-shipping Duolingo while headcount keeps shrinking.

Babbel teaches languages online through lessons and conversation practice, competing mainly against Duolingo and free AI chatbots like ChatGPT. It is getting harder to defend because Duolingo already has 68% of Babbel's US users and shipped a video call feature in early 2025, while free AI tools can do similar conversation practice at no cost. The company's best hope is its business-to-business channel (selling to companies rather than individuals), which brings in about one-third of revenue, but that part of the business is too small right now to rescue the consumer side if users keep switching away.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT voice mode and Gemini. Free AI voice chat now handles casual conversation practice, the core of what Babbel charges for, at no cost to users. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Duolingo. Duolingo shipped an AI Video Call feature in January 2025 while Babbel Speak is still in open beta, and most of Babbel's US users already run both apps. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Babbel for Business: 1,000 plus corporate clients supplying roughly a third of revenue, a channel Duolingo has not built out.
What would change this call
Babbel Speak exits open beta with a public GA date and pricing. Shows the AI pivot is real, not stalled, versus Duolingo's shipped Video Call.
Babbel headcount reported below 800 in future filings or Revelio data. Would show cost-cutting deepening rather than stabilizing.
Duolingo announces a dedicated enterprise/B2B language product. Would directly attack Babbel's main remaining moat, its corporate client base.

No profitability figures have been disclosed since a reported €15.5M net loss in 2020. Revenue was about €330M in 2023 and €250M in 2022 per company-linked data, but no net income has been reported since, and headcount has been cut sharply into 2026.
Could AI replace Babbel?
AI voice tools already replicate Babbel's core conversation practice. Duolingo shipped its AI Video Call feature in January 2025, while Babbel's own AI conversational trainer, Babbel Speak, was still in open beta as of September 16, 2025, putting Babbel behind on its own core use case.
Who is Babbel's biggest competitor?
Duolingo, which posted $748M in 2024 revenue versus Babbel's roughly €330M-352M range, and has about 7x Babbel's US user base. Notably, 62-68% of Babbel's US users also use Duolingo, per a July 14, 2026 behavioral-data analysis.
Is Babbel laying off staff?
Independent workforce trackers show sharp contraction: Revelio Labs recorded a 39.2% YoY headcount drop to about 804 employees by December 2025, while Crustdata put headcount at roughly 1,112 by June 2026, down about 16% YoY.
Who owns Babbel?
Babbel is privately held, based in Berlin, Germany. It attempted a Frankfurt Stock Exchange IPO in September 2021 targeting a ~$1.5bn valuation but pulled the listing days before pricing, citing Evergrande-related market volatility, and has not relisted since.
What is Babbel Speak?
Babbel Speak is Babbel's AI-powered voice conversational trainer, rebranded and expanded in a September 16, 2025 launch covering English, Spanish, French, Italian, and German with 28 scenarios per language pair. It remains in open beta, launched after Duolingo's comparable AI feature.
