The call

Baishan runs a capital-heavy CDN business squeezed by bigger Chinese cloud players at home, with its overseas arm as the main area still standing apart.

Baishan Cloud rents out servers and data delivery networks at the edge of the internet, mostly inside China. The business is hard to copy because it needs massive upfront spending on physical infrastructure, but Tencent, Alibaba, and China's state phone companies already own that same infrastructure and are now offering competing services for free or bundled into their cloud packages, which Baishan cannot match. The one thing that could save the company is if its overseas business (serving international customers outside China) grows fast enough with good profit margins, since big U.S. cloud companies face political barriers entering China and Baishan could own that gap, but there is no sign this is happening yet.

Why
01
AI pressure: Tencent Cloud EdgeOne. Tencent plans a free EdgeOne CDN tier with bundled AI traffic optimization for 2026, threatening to commoditize Baishan's paid tools. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Alibaba Cloud, Tencent Cloud, Huawei, and state telcos (China Mobile, Unicom, Telecom). These players already run competing CDN and edge platforms at scale, and state telcos hold over half of China's market. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Its overseas EdgeNext unit sits outside China's price war, where domestic rivals face geopolitical friction reaching those customers.
What would change this call
Tencent Cloud EdgeOne free-tier adoption among mid-market CDN buyers through 2026. Shows domestic hyperscalers commoditizing Baishan's core CDN offering with free bundled tools.
Baishan's H1 2024/full-year 2024 revenue growth rate versus prior year. Flat or negative growth would confirm continued domestic share loss to larger rivals.
Outcome of Baishan's refiled HKEX IPO (pending as of late 2025). A second lapse or withdrawal would show investors doubt its ability to compete against Wangsu and telcos.

Named risks
  • Persistent net losses paired with capex exceeding 80% of revenue strains cash. Severity: high
  • Free AI-optimized CDN tiers from Tencent and Alibaba commoditize core offering. Severity: high
  • Second Hong Kong IPO attempt could lapse again after first filing failed in January 2024. Severity: medium
  • Single-digit domestic market share against entrenched state telcos limits pricing power. Severity: medium
  • Geopolitical scrutiny of Chinese issuers could complicate any future cross-border listing plans. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Baishan Cloud profitable in 2026?
No. Baishan posted net losses of RMB 170-190 million per year from 2020 to 2022, narrowing to RMB 35.9 million in H1 2023, per its HKEX prospectus reported January 10, 2024. No verified full-year 2024 or 2025 profit figure has surfaced.
Is Baishan Cloud going public?
Baishan first filed for a Hong Kong IPO in January 2024, which lapsed, then refiled on October 15, 2025 with CITIC Securities and Haitong International as joint sponsors. As of July 2026 the listing remains pending with no confirmed date.
Who owns Baishan Cloud Technology?
Baishan is privately held and VC-backed, having raised roughly six rounds since its April 2015 founding, including a Series C of about $50 million led by Alpha Capital and Chunjia Capital that closed in January 2018, plus a Series C+ round involving ICBC in May 2018.
Could AI replace Baishan Cloud's CDN business?
Baishan's core caching and traffic-routing functions face commoditization as hyperscalers bundle AI-driven optimization for free, exemplified by Tencent Cloud's EdgeOne free CDN tier with direct China ISP peering launched in 2026, though Baishan's physical edge nodes remain harder to replicate purely with software.
Who is Baishan Cloud's biggest competitor?
Baishan competes against China's state telcos (China Mobile, Unicom, Telecom) and hyperscalers Alibaba and Tencent, all named in its own IPO prospectus as larger rivals; Baishan held roughly 3.1% of China's edge-cloud market in 2022 versus Alibaba's 33-39% cloud IaaS share in 2025.
How big is Baishan Cloud's overseas EdgeNext business?
Overseas revenue grew from 7.9% of total revenue in 2020 to 26.2% in H1 2023, per Baishan's HKEX prospectus reported January 10, 2024. EdgeNext, formalized as an independent international unit in 2023, is headquartered in Bellevue, Washington.
