The call

Lending and insurance keep growing on license and data advantages, while newer health, AMC, and digital bets still lose money each year.

Bajaj Finserv lends money to millions of Indians for things like appliances and motorcycles, and also sells insurance. It is hard to copy because it has a government license, data on how borrowers repay loans, and relationships with 250,000 stores that sell these goods, advantages that even bigger banks have not matched. The main threat is HDB Financial Services, a newer lending company backed by HDFC Bank, which is now trying to do the same thing at those same stores, though one thing to watch is whether Bajaj can keep growing or whether emerging business losses and new AI rules from India's regulator could change the picture.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI lender can get an NBFC license or carry insurance risk; Bajaj uses AI internally to cut costs, not to replace itself. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: HDB Financial Services (HDFC Bank's listed NBFC arm). HDB Financial Services, now public, is building point-of-sale and merchant EMI ambitions but has not yet dented Bajaj Finance's retail volumes. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. An RBI Upper Layer NBFC license, repayment data on tens of millions of borrowers, and 250,000+ merchant tie-ups that banks have not matched.
What would change this call
HDB Financial Services launches or scales a point-of-sale/merchant EMI network post-IPO. Would show a bank-backed rival is capturing Bajaj Finance's consumer-durable retail share.
Bajaj Finserv's emerging-business losses (health, AMC, digital) widen again beyond FY26's ₹539 crore. Would show capital allocation into new units is not reaching a funded path to profitability.
RBI finalizes and enforces the FREE-AI framework rules on AI-driven lending/underwriting. Would show regulation constraining Bajaj's internal AI cost-reduction and productivity plans.

Questions people ask
What is Bajaj Finserv's biggest risk?
The clearest watch-item is Jio Financial Services, a capital-rich Reliance-backed entrant positioned to contest small-ticket consumer credit, though it has not shown measured share gains as of the July 2026 assessment. A dated checkpoint to verify is whether Jio Financial fails to capture measurable market share in that segment through two consecutive quarters by January 2027.
Is Bajaj Finserv in financial trouble?
No signs of trouble appear in the numbers: FY26 consolidated total revenue was Rs 150,530 crore (~$16bn) with consolidated PAT of Rs 9,801 crore as of March 31, 2026. Q1 FY26 consolidated PAT rose 30.4% YoY to Rs 2,789 crore as of June 30, 2025, and Bajaj Finance AUM reached Rs 5,09,975 crore by FY26 year-end.
Who are Bajaj Finserv's biggest competitors?
Jio Financial Services is the most-watched entrant, given its capital backing from Reliance and its focus on small-ticket consumer credit. Larger universal banks like ICICI Bank and platforms like PB Fintech also compete across lending and insurance lines, though as of the July 2026 assessment none has visibly dented Bajaj Finserv's position.
Is Bajaj Finserv at risk from AI?
The evidence points the other way: Bajaj already runs over 800 AI agents internally to originate loans more cheaply, rather than facing disruption from outside AI-driven lenders. The AI threat status is listed as not-applicable in the July 2026 assessment, with the company treating AI as a cost tool rather than a competitive threat.
What gives Bajaj Finserv its competitive edge?
Its protection rests on a multi-license financial structure spanning lending, insurance, and asset management, combined with a merchant-based lending model built on over 33,000 merchant tie-ups. This model has resisted replication by larger, better-capitalized rivals for more than 15 years, according to the July 2026 assessment.
