The call

Banma has real cars running its software and Alibaba's commerce rails behind it, but revenue is flat, losses are huge, and Huawei is already shipping a rival cockpit at scale.

Banma builds the operating system that runs car dashboards and infotainment systems, and it has already shipped software in BMW's new electric cars starting in 2026. It also gets to plug Alibaba's services (like Alipay and maps) directly into its cars, which sounds valuable. But sales have barely moved in three years (around RMB 850 million annually), it loses almost as much money as it makes, and Huawei and Baidu have already shipped their own competing car software that customers are choosing. A huge write-down in 2025 suggests even Alibaba's own team thinks the old technology is worth much less than before. The one thing that could turn this around: if BMW's new cars actually sell well in China starting in 2026 and Banma's revenue jumps past RMB 1 billion and keeps growing, then having Alibaba's shopping and payment apps built into the cars might actually give it real power over pricing.

Why
01
AI pressure: Alibaba's own Qwen/Yan AI and rival cockpit LLMs (Baidu ERNIE, Huawei's stack). Generative AI is turning voice, navigation and commerce features into commodity add-ons any OEM can bolt on, shrinking Banma's software edge. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Huawei (HarmonyOS for Car). Huawei's cockpit OS is live across many independent brands with strong voice performance, pulling OEM design wins away from Banma. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep, contracted integration into BMW's Neue Klasse cars and exclusive routing to Alibaba's Alipay, Taobao and Amap rails for in-car commerce.

Independent cockpit supplier market-share rankings for Q2 to Q3 2026. Would show whether Huawei and Baidu are gaining share at Banma's expense.
Banma's post-IPO revenue and loss figures in 2026 to 2027 filings. Would show if losses narrow toward breakeven or keep tracking near 100% of revenue.
BMW Neue Klasse China iX3 production volumes from Q4 2026 onward. Would show whether the flagship OEM integration converts to real revenue at scale.

Questions people ask
Is Banma Network Technologies profitable in 2026?
No. Banma posted a net loss of RMB 847.4 million in 2024 against revenue of just RMB 823.8 million, per its HKEX Accountants' Report. Revenue stayed roughly flat at RMB 861.1 million in 2025, and FY2025 included a RMB 1.84 billion impairment on legacy AliOS intangibles, showing losses still track close to 100% of revenue.
Who owns Banma Network Technologies?
Alibaba Group holds about 44.72% pre-IPO and plans to retain just over 30% after listing, per an August 20, 2025 spinoff announcement. SAIC Motor's investment arm and earlier backers CMG-SDIC Capital and Yunfeng Capital also hold stakes from funding rounds in 2018 and 2021.
Is Huawei beating Banma in China's smart cockpit market?
Independent industry data from September 29, 2025 credits Huawei's HarmonyOS for Car with an 86.7% voice-recognition success rate, while Q1 2025 supplier rankings show Desay SV, Qualcomm, and iFLYTEK leading their categories with Banma absent from the top tier, per Metal.com's June 6, 2025 rankings.
When will Banma go public?
No date is confirmed. Alibaba announced Banma's Hong Kong spinoff on August 20, 2025 with Deutsche Bank, CICC, and Guotai Junan as sponsors, but draft HKEX listing documents dated into May 2026 still mark price and share count as redacted, pending CSRC and HKEX approval.
Does BMW use Banma's technology?
Yes. A March 26, 2025 partnership has BMW's Neue Klasse China-built models, starting with the long-wheelbase iX3, using Banma's Qwen-based Yan AI to power BMW's Intelligent Personal Assistant starting in 2026, giving Banma a marquee global OEM logo beyond its China-only client base.
Is it risky to join Banma right now?
There are real open risks: a software copyright dispute filed in September 2024 remains under appeal as of the FY2025 filing, revenue has been flat since 2023 (RMB 871.9M to RMB 861.1M), and the pending HKEX IPO still has redacted pricing as of May 2026, leaving near-term structure unsettled.
