The call

Bedrock has cash, credible founders, and live pilots, but its main product is still unshipped and slow-moving giants could still enter the same lane.

Bedrock Robotics takes existing excavators and adds software to run them without an operator in the cab. The company has raised a lot of money and hired experienced engineers, and has completed test projects, but the main product is not finished yet (expected late 2026). It is not actually hard for Caterpillar, John Deere, or Volvo to build this themselves since they make the original machines; they have been slow so far, but there is nothing stopping them from catching up once they decide to. The real question is whether Bedrock can actually deliver a fully working, self-driving excavator to a real paying customer by 2026 and prove the business makes money, because if the big equipment makers wake up and add this feature to their own machines, Bedrock's advantage disappears.

Why
01
AI pressure: Built Robotics and FieldAI (rival autonomy stacks). Rival autonomy startups race for the same operator-less milestone, so AI progress here is competition, not a predator eating Bedrock from outside. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Caterpillar (also Deere, Volvo CE). Equipment giants control dealer networks and installed fleets but have not shipped a competing retrofit-autonomy product yet. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Ex-Waymo team, real named customers, and live supervised-autonomy jobsites give it a lead before big OEMs move.
What would change this call
Bedrock ships fully operator-less excavation at a paying customer by end of 2026. Shows the core product moved from demo to shipped, commercial moat.
Caterpillar, Deere, or Volvo CE announces its own retrofit-autonomy program. Shows incumbents entering directly, weakening Bedrock's window.
Built Robotics or FieldAI announces a named commercial customer win in mass excavation. Shows a funded rival converting pilots into paying contracts first.
Key numbers
  • $270M Series B at $1.75B valuation (2026-02-04)
  • 65,000+ cubic yards moved under supervised autonomy (2025-11-19)
  • Total funding over $350M since founding in 2024 (2026-02-04)
Named risks
  • Fully operator-less excavator milestone, targeted for late 2026, has not shipped and could slip into 2027. Severity: high
  • Incumbent OEMs Caterpillar, Deere, or Volvo CE could launch cross-brand retrofit autonomy, eroding channel advantage. Severity: high
  • Crowded field of well-capitalized startup rivals including Built Robotics and $405M-funded FieldAI. Severity: medium
  • No public revenue disclosure, leaving unit economics of hardware-plus-subscription model unverified. Severity: medium
  • Industry-wide robotics safety scrutiny following the Figure AI whistleblower lawsuit in late 2025 could invite regulatory attention. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Bedrock Robotics profitable?
Bedrock Robotics does not publicly disclose revenue as of mid-2026. The company closed a $270 million Series B on February 4, 2026 at a $1.75 billion valuation, but profitability figures have not been reported, and its flagship operator-less excavator product has not yet shipped commercially.
Could AI replace construction equipment operators through Bedrock Robotics?
That is literally Bedrock's business model: its Operator retrofit kit uses Waymo-style ML perception to let excavators dig without a human in the cab. It moved 65,000+ cubic yards under supervised autonomy in Phoenix in November 2025, but fully operator-less deployment is still targeted for later 2026.
Who are Bedrock Robotics' biggest competitors?
Built Robotics is the longest-running rival, holding roughly 20 patents in autonomous excavation since 2018 as of June 2026. FieldAI has raised $405 million with backing from NVIDIA's NVentures, the same investor in Bedrock's Series B, per a February 20, 2026 report.
How much money has Bedrock Robotics raised?
Bedrock Robotics has raised over $350 million total: an $80 million combined Seed and Series A round announced July 16, 2025, and a $270 million Series B closed February 4, 2026, co-led by CapitalG and the Valor Atreides AI Fund at a $1.75 billion post-money valuation.
What is Bedrock Robotics' valuation?
Bedrock Robotics was valued at $1.75 billion post-money after closing its $270 million Series B round on February 4, 2026, co-led by CapitalG and the Valor Atreides AI Fund, giving it unicorn status roughly 19 months after emerging from stealth.
Who owns Bedrock Robotics?
Bedrock Robotics is privately held with no parent company, founded in March 2024 by CEO Boris Sofman and CTO Kevin Peterson, mostly ex-Waymo engineers. Investors include 8VC, Eclipse Ventures, CapitalG, Valor Equity Partners, NVIDIA's NVentures, and Tishman Speyer as of February 2026.
