The call

BeReal survives as a Voodoo-owned app trying to sell ads to a shrinking daily audience while Instagram runs its own version of the same idea.

BeReal makes a simple app that prompts users twice a day to take photos with both phone cameras at the same time, aiming for authentic moments. The idea was easy for bigger companies to copy, and Instagram launched nearly the same feature called Instants in 2026. Without anything special that only BeReal can do (like hard-to-build technology, unique data, or locked-in users), there is no real reason people have to stay rather than use Instagram's version, which already has billions of users. The one thing that could change everything is if BeReal somehow convinces users that the standalone app matters more than a feature inside Instagram, but user numbers have already dropped from 20 million to 12 million in four years.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI lab is targeting BeReal directly; the pressure it faces is a cloned feature, not a model. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Meta (Instagram Instants). Instagram shipped its own dual camera daily timer, Instants, in May 2026, copying BeReal's one mechanic inside a much bigger app. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Nothing structural protects it; only Voodoo's cash and the habit of remaining daily users keep the app running.

Questions people ask
Is BeReal profitable in 2026?
BeReal had essentially $0 ad revenue before its June 2024 Voodoo acquisition. It launched US native advertising in April 2025, and one analyst estimated first-full-year ad revenue near $32M by May 2026, still an unverified estimate rather than confirmed profitability.
Who owns BeReal now?
French mobile publisher Voodoo acquired BeReal outright for €500M (about $537M) in June 2024, a discount to BeReal's 2022 valuation of roughly $600M. Founder Alexis Barreyat departed post-transition; Aymeric Roffé became CEO.
Could AI replace BeReal?
BeReal's core mechanic, an unedited dual-camera daily photo, resists direct AI generation, and the company states 'no AIs allowed' on its homepage. But its authenticity brand is vulnerable to generative imagery elsewhere, and BeReal already uses HiveAI for content moderation.
Is BeReal losing users to Instagram?
Instagram launched a near-identical feature called Instants globally on May 13, 2026, directly targeting BeReal's daily-timer format. One independent analyst estimated BeReal's daily active users at around 12M as of May 19, 2026, down sharply from its 2022 peak.
Who is BeReal's biggest competitor?
Instagram (Meta) is the biggest threat, having launched its cloned 'Instants' feature globally in May 2026 using vastly greater distribution. Snapchat added a similar dual-camera feature back in August 2022, showing the mechanic has no structural protection.
What is BeReal's revenue in 2026?
No audited figure is public. An independent analyst using Sensor Tower data estimated BeReal's first full year of ad revenue at roughly $32M as of May 19, 2026, with a theoretical ceiling near $300M annually if fully monetized, but this is an unverified estimate, not a company disclosure.
