The call

Bitmain still makes most of the world's mining chips, but sanctions risk, a shrinking crypto cycle, and a resurgent MicroBT are closing in at once.

Bitmain designs and manufactures the specialized computer chips that miners use to verify Bitcoin transactions. It controls roughly 75 to 90 percent of this market and has built real engineering advantages that took years to develop. However, three major risks threaten the company. First, the U.S. government is investigating Bitmain and has already blacklisted one of its sister companies, which could cut off its access to the advanced factories in Taiwan that it needs to make chips. Second, Bitmain's business swings wildly with Bitcoin's price: when Bitcoin falls, miners stop buying new equipment, and Bitmain's revenue crashes (it has already laid off half its staff once before in 2018). Third, miners are now spending their money on artificial intelligence data centers instead of Bitcoin mining gear, which shrinks the pie that Bitmain can grab. The company has not raised new investor money since 2018, tried and failed to go public twice, and has no clear path to cash out for current owners. What could change everything: either the U.S. government clears Bitmain of security concerns and restores its access to chip factories, or Bitcoin's price surges and miners decide mining is more profitable than AI again.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI/HPC datacenter buildout (Nvidia, hyperscalers) competing for TSMC capacity and miner capex. Miners are shifting capex toward AI/HPC hosting, and AI chip demand crowds Bitmain's own TSMC wafer allocation. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: MicroBT (Whatsminer). Founded by an ex-Bitmain chip designer, MicroBT has pushed Bitmain's share from about 90% in 2024 to roughly 75-80% by 2026. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep chip-design know-how, manufacturing scale, and a still-dominant 75-80% share of ASIC mining hardware.
What would change this call
US Commerce Department adds Bitmain itself to the Entity List. Would confirm US regulators treat Bitmain like sanctioned affiliate Sophgo, threatening its TSMC chip supply.
MicroBT's reported market share crosses 40% in a 2027 shipment report. Would show Bitmain's dominance eroding faster than the current 75-80% estimate suggests.
Bitmain files for a new IPO or discloses a funding round above the stale $12B valuation. Would show renewed investor confidence and a real liquidity path after two failed IPO attempts.
Key numbers
  • Bitmain held ~90% of Bitcoin ASIC market (2024-08-26)
  • Bitcoin down ~50% from Oct 2025 peak of $126,080 (2026-07)
  • MicroBT share rose from ~10% to ~15-35% by 2026 (2026-06-25)
Named risks
  • Bitmain itself could be added to the US Entity List following the Sophgo precedent. Severity: high
  • DHS Operation Red Sun investigation into hardware security could result in a formal import or use ban. Severity: high
  • Bitcoin price down ~50% from October 2025 peak is depressing demand for new mining rigs. Severity: high
  • MicroBT continues taking ASIC market share from Bitmain's historic dominance. Severity: medium
  • Key US partner American Bitcoin is in financial distress, down over 95% from peak as of July 2026. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Bitmain profitable in 2026?
No audited financials have been released since Bitmain's 2018 Hong Kong IPO prospectus, which showed a 1H2018 net profit of $742.7 million alongside negative operating cash flow and about $1 billion in unsold inventory. No verified profit figures exist for 2026.
Could AI replace Bitmain?
AI models cannot run Bitcoin's SHA-256 proof of work, so Bitmain's ASIC chips are not directly substitutable. But miners shifting capex to AI/HPC data centers helped drive a roughly 4% Q1 2026 hashrate decline, the first Q1 drop since 2020.
Who is Bitmain's biggest competitor?
MicroBT, maker of the Whatsminer line and founded by ex-Bitmain chip designer Yang Zuoxing, is the main rival. Bloomberg reported Bitmain held about 90% of the ASIC market in August 2024, with 2026 vendor estimates putting it closer to 75 to 80%.
Who owns Bitmain?
Bitmain is privately held. Co-founder Micree Zhan borrowed about $600 million in January 2021 to buy out co-founder Jihan Wu's stake, after which Bitdeer and BTC.com were spun off to Wu, leaving Zhan in control of the core Antminer business.
Has Bitmain had layoffs?
Bitmain cut roughly half its staff in December 2018 following a downturn. Current headcount is disputed across trackers, ranging from about 427 to over 2,000 employees as of 2026, with no confirmed recent layoff announcement.
Will Bitmain go public?
Bitmain has tried twice: a Hong Kong IPO filed September 2018 lapsed in March 2019, and a confidential US SEC filing from October 2019 never resulted in a listing. No new funding round has been confirmed since 2018, and its $12 billion valuation mark is stale.
