The call

Boost has a real bank licence and telco backing but has already lost the wallet fight and is leaning on a stressed parent to fund a still-unprofitable bank.

Boost is a phone-company-owned digital bank in Malaysia that offers checking accounts and loans. It has a real banking license, which keeps out pure software startups, but it is already losing to Touch 'n Go in the e-wallet race (only 2% of users versus 78% for the leader) and faces four other licensed banks that have already launched products, including GXBank (which has more customers) and Ryt Bank (which promotes itself with AI). The biggest question is whether Boost can keep its depositors and loan customers when promotional interest rates come down, especially since its parent company Axiata is deeply in debt and selling off stakes to fund Boost instead of investing more money themselves.

Why
01
AI pressure: Ryt Bank. Ryt Bank markets itself as an AI-run bank, pulling attention from Boost Bank in the same licensed digital-banking pool. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Touch 'n Go eWallet. Touch 'n Go holds 78% of recent e-wallet usage in Malaysia against 2% for Boost, leaving Boost's original wallet base hollowed out. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A BNM digital-banking licence plus Axiata's telco distribution keep Boost inside the regulated club competitors can't just code their way into.

Questions people ask
Is Boost profitable in 2026?
No. Boost Holdings posted a group loss of RM125.7 million for FY2025, and Axiata's CEO said in February 2026 that Boost Bank targets profitability only by 2028, implying continued losses through the forecast window.
How does Boost's e-wallet compare to Touch 'n Go?
Boost trails badly. An Ipsos Malaysia survey from May 2025 found only 2% of e-wallet users reported using Boost in the past three months, versus 78% for Touch 'n Go and 44% for Maybank's MAE.
Who owns Boost?
Boost Holdings is majority owned by Axiata Group Berhad (about 77.76% as of mid-2026), with Great Eastern Digital holding roughly 19.90% and Mitsui & Co about 2.34%. Axiata is reportedly finalizing a stake sale to Angkasa as of June 2026.
Could AI replace Boost's lending and banking functions?
Boost's core underwriting and payment routing are exposed to AI-driven alternative-data models, but its Bank Negara Malaysia digital banking licence and telco-linked distribution via Axiata are regulatory and distribution assets that pure AI/software rivals cannot easily replicate as of 2026.
Is Boost's biggest competitor Touch 'n Go or GXBank?
Both, in different arenas. Touch 'n Go dominates e-wallet usage (78% vs Boost's 2%, May 2025 Ipsos data), while GXBank leads Malaysia's five digital banks by customer count (750,000+ users, per Wise, January 2026), outpacing Boost Bank.
How much has Boost Bank raised in deposits?
Reported figures conflict: the Financial Times cited RM600 million in deposits after one year (by June 2025), while a Mambu case study cited RM700 million within six months (by December 2024), both driven by promotional savings rates of 3.2 to 3.6% p.a.
