The call

BP's oil and gas assets are hard to kill, but its independence as a standalone company is what's actually up for grabs.

BP finds, produces, and sells oil and gas around the world, plus runs trading desks and owns the Castrol oil brand. The company's oil reserves and pipelines are hard to replace because they took decades to build and need government permits, which protects BP's core business for the next few years. However, BP is cutting 10,900 jobs using AI software to automate accounting, engineering, and supply chain work, Shell is much larger and keeps being rumored as a buyer, and activist investors are pushing for change after the CEO and board chair were both removed within eight months. The key to BP's future is whether Shell makes a formal bid in the next 18 months, and which parts of BP get spun off or sold first.

Why
01
AI pressure: BP's own AI/automation program (Palantir, Azure/Fabric). AI and software cut back office, finance, and procurement jobs, over 10,900 roles gone, cash saved not eaten. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Shell plc. Shell is twice BP's size and denied a bid in mid 2025, but chatter keeps returning as BP's balance sheet improves. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Licensed reserves, trading franchise, and physical infrastructure that no software or rival can replicate fast.
What would change this call
Whether Shell makes a confirmed formal takeover approach for BP by mid-2027. Would show BP's independence as a standalone company is ending.
Whether Elliott Investment Management exits its stake or escalates to a proxy fight. Would show whether activist pressure on BP is resolving or intensifying.
Whether the Castrol/Stonepeak sale and North Sea divestment close on schedule by end-2026. Would show whether BP's $20bn restructuring plan is on track.

Questions people ask
Is BP profitable in 2026?
Yes. BP's Q1 2026 underlying replacement-cost profit was $3.2bn, up sharply from $1.5bn in Q4 2025, on revenue of $52.26bn (up 11.4% year-over-year), beating consensus estimates as of 2026-04-27.
Will Shell buy BP?
Unclear. Shell publicly denied an approach in June 2025 under UK Takeover Code Rule 2.8, and reports from May 2026 say Shell's own M&A chief resigned after its CEO/CFO blocked a proposed BP bid in December 2025. No formal offer has been made.
Is BP laying off workers?
Yes. BP cut about 4,700 employee roles and 3,000 contractor roles (roughly 5% of its workforce) announced January 2025, plus a further ~6,200 office-role cuts by end-2026 announced August 2025, tied explicitly to AI and digitalization.
Could AI replace BP's business?
No, not the core business. AI is automating back-office, procurement, and contractor management (about $900m in supply-chain savings in Q2 2025 via Palantir), but physical reserves, licenses, refining infrastructure, and trading books remain outside AI's reach.
Who owns BP?
BP is publicly traded with no controlling parent, listed on the LSE and NYSE. Activist fund Elliott Investment Management built a stake reported at about 5% (roughly $4.7-5bn) as of March 5, 2026, making it BP's third-largest shareholder.
Who is BP's biggest competitor?
Shell plc, with a market cap of about $234bn as of May 2026, more than double BP's roughly $102-110bn valuation in mid-2026. Other major peers include ExxonMobil, Chevron, TotalEnergies, and Equinor.
