The call

Brandfolder keeps paying customers through workflow lock-in, but its AI tagging pitch is fading and its new PE owners have not yet said whether they'll fund a comeback or let it coast.

Brandfolder helps companies organize, tag, and find their logos, photos, and marketing files in one place. Its main strength has always been smart search and labeling that other tools could not match, but free AI models from Google, OpenAI, and others now do that same tagging and search automatically, so Brandfolder's biggest advantage is fading. The part that could stick around is being locked into a company's workflow and connected to other business software, but that is also the part that Adobe and other big competitors can copy most easily. The one thing that could change the story is if the new owners (a private equity firm that bought its parent company Smartsheet in early 2025) keep investing in new AI features and keep Brandfolder moving fast. Right now, the company lost its place in the main industry rankings, and there is a real risk the owners will cut costs and let the product go stale over the next few years instead of fighting back.

Why
01
AI pressure: Multimodal models like Google Gemini, OpenAI GPT, Anthropic Claude. General AI models now tag, search, and describe images natively, eroding the exact feature that used to set Brandfolder apart. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Adobe (Experience Manager Assets and Creative Cloud). Adobe already bundles asset management into tools creative teams use daily, making a standalone DAM harder to justify. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Existing customers have files, folders, and workflows already built into Brandfolder, and switching means re-tagging and re-linking everything.

Named risks
  • PE parent (Blackstone/Vista) may deprioritize Brandfolder as a milked asset rather than growth pillar. Severity: high

  • Dropped from Gartner Leader tier in Nov 2025 MQ after being a Forrester Leader in 2024, signaling competitive slippage. Severity: medium
  • No standalone revenue or headcount disclosure since 2020, obscuring true financial health within Smartsheet. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Brandfolder profitable as a standalone business?
Brandfolder does not disclose standalone financials; it is folded into parent Smartsheet, which reported roughly $958M revenue and a $105M net loss for FY2024. Since Smartsheet went private under Blackstone and Vista in January 2025 for $8.4B, no independent Brandfolder P&L has been published.
Could AI replace Brandfolder's core product?
Brandfolder's 'Brand Intelligence' tagging and search feature, launched September 2019, was built on third-party models from Google, Amazon and Clarifai rather than proprietary tech. That same tagging/search job is now performed natively by general-purpose multimodal AI, exposing the company's most-differentiated layer to commoditization.
Who owns Brandfolder?
Brandfolder is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Smartsheet Inc., acquired for about $155M in cash and stock in a deal that closed September 14, 2020. Smartsheet itself was taken private by Blackstone and Vista Equity Partners for $8.4B, with that acquisition closing January 22, 2025.
Is joining Brandfolder a safe career move right now?
Brandfolder sits inside a PE-owned parent (Blackstone/Vista bought Smartsheet for $8.4B, closed Jan 22, 2025) known for cost discipline. No specific 2025-2026 layoff announcement targeting the Brandfolder unit was found, but headcount estimates (roughly 60-200) are inconsistent and unconfirmed.
Who is Brandfolder's biggest competitor?
Aprimo was named a Leader in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for DAM Platforms published November 4, 2025, while Brandfolder was absent from that Leader tier despite being named a Forrester Wave Leader in Q1 2024. Adobe's AEM Assets is the larger incumbent threat given its scale.
Did Brandfolder lose its analyst ranking?
Yes. Brandfolder was named a Leader in Forrester's Digital Asset Management for Customer Experience Wave in Q1 2024, but it did not appear in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for DAM Platforms published November 4, 2025, where rival Aprimo took the Leader spot.
