Broadcom
Broadcom makes custom AI chips for hyperscalers and sells VMware software to enterprises.
Broadcom's AI chip business is booked out past 2028, but MediaTek's rise as a second source for Google and an EU review of VMware licensing are the two things worth watching.
Broadcom sells the memory chips and packaging that connect AI computers together, plus VMware software that runs on company servers. It is hard to replace because it has locked-in contracts with Google, OpenAI, Meta, and Apple through 2031, and its manufacturing partners cannot easily copy its memory supply and packaging at the scale hyperscalers need. However, Google is now using MediaTek as a second supplier instead of only Broadcom, which could shrink Broadcom's share from nearly all of Google's chips down to roughly two-thirds by 2028 if that trend holds. A separate European government investigation into VMware's pricing practices could also force changes. The company's upcoming earnings report in early September 2026 is critical: if revenue falls short of the $29.4 billion forecast, the stock could drop sharply.
EU antitrust review of VMware's licensing/channel model concludes with fines or forced changes. Would show regulatory pressure is denting VMware's lock-in economics, not just under review.
Broadcom's Q3 FY2026 earnings (Sep 3, 2026) come in below the guided $29.4B revenue and $16B AI semiconductor figures. Would show AI demand or execution is cooling faster than management projected.
- AI chip revenue $10.8B, up 143% YoY
- AI chip bookings over $30B vs $10.8B shipped
- Stock down 20-25% from its 52-week high of $495
- EU antitrust review of VMware licensing and invite-only channel model could force structural remedies.
- MediaTek second-sourcing on Google TPU program could erode Broadcom's design share over 2026-2028.
- Key AI customers (Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta) pursuing in-house chip design could compress future co-design revenue.
- Q3 FY2026 guidance of $29.4B revenue and $16B AI semiconductor sets a high bar that risks sharp stock reaction if missed.
- Conflicting headcount data across sources signals uncertain post-VMware integration trajectory.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Nvidia | contesting | Nvidia dominates merchant GPUs but structurally avoids custom-ASIC competition, per July 2026 analysis |
| MediaTek | gaining on | Second-sourcing Google TPU design; Macquarie bear case sees Broadcom share falling 95% to 65% by 2028 |
| Marvell Technology | gaining on | Closest custom-ASIC peer, stock up ~171% YTD vs Broadcom's slower move as of July 8, 2026 |
| Google/Alphabet | contesting | Largest AI chip customer also pursuing greater in-house TPU/chip vertical integration, July 2026 |
| AMD | losing to | AMD data-center revenue only $5.775B in Q1 2026 vs Broadcom's much larger AI semi scale |
- Is Broadcom profitable in 2026?
- Yes. Broadcom reported FY2025 net income of $23.13B on $63.89B revenue, and trailing-twelve-month profit reached $29.32B on $75.47B revenue as of mid-July 2026, driven by AI semiconductor demand growing 143% YoY in Q2 FY2026.
- Who is Broadcom's biggest competitor in AI chips?
- Nvidia dominates merchant AI GPUs, but in custom ASIC co-design (Broadcom's core AI moat) the closest rivals are Marvell Technology, whose stock rose ~171% YTD by July 2026, and MediaTek, now second-sourcing Google's TPU program per a July 2026 Morgan Stanley note.
- Could AI replace Broadcom?
- No. Broadcom is itself AI infrastructure, supplying custom accelerators and networking chips (Google TPU, Meta MTIA) to AI labs; it holds multi-year co-design contracts through 2031 with Google and Apple and locked HBM memory supply, per July 2026 filings.
- Is Broadcom laying off employees in 2026?
- Broadcom's own reported headcount fell to 33,000 as of Nov 2, 2025, down from 37,000 a year earlier (-10.8%), reflecting post-VMware integration cost cuts, though third-party trackers like Crustdata cite a much higher ~54,930 figure as of June 2026.
- Who owns Broadcom?
- Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) is publicly traded with no parent company; Vanguard (10.03%) and BlackRock (7.63%) are the largest institutional holders as of early 2024, institutional ownership is ~78.6%, and Hock Tan serves as President and CEO.
- Is Broadcom stock safe to buy right now, mid-2026?
- Broadcom traded around $360-395 in July 2026, down roughly 20-25% from its $495 all-time high, amid MediaTek competition concerns and an EU antitrust review of VMware licensing opened July 2026, while insiders including CLO Mark Brazeal sold ~$10M in stock on July 10, 2026.
