The call

Bunq survives on a license Revolut also holds at greater scale, so the fight is about margins and fraud costs, not AI.

Bunq is a mobile-first bank licensed to operate across Europe. It is hard to replace because it has a government license and a real user base, but Revolut does almost everything Bunq does and has twice as many users and more money. The real problem is that fraud losses have jumped from €203,000 to over €10 million, eating into profits faster than the company can grow revenue. Watch the fraud costs and any regulatory trouble in 2025, the license keeps Bunq alive, but regulators are watching it closely now, which could change everything.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is not eating Bunq directly, but Bunq's own AI fraud monitoring is under regulatory scrutiny after a DNB fine. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Revolut. Revolut runs the same EU license at 2 to 3 times the users and more capital, squeezing Bunq in its home market. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Its 2014 Dutch banking license is rare and hard to replicate, giving it deposit trust ING and Revolut still need to earn in some markets.

Questions people ask
Is Bunq profitable in 2026?
Bunq reported its first full year of net profitability in 2023, with €53.1 million net profit, 11 million users, and about €7 billion in deposits, announced January 30, 2024. A 2025 Annual Report was published May 29, 2026, updating FY2025 figures.
Who owns Bunq?
Bunq is privately held. Founder Ali Niknam funded it alone with roughly €120-150 million until 2021, when Pollen Street Capital led a €193m Series A at a €1.6bn valuation. As of March 2025, Niknam and Pollen Street Capital were in an Amsterdam court dispute over funding commitments.
Could AI replace Bunq's operations?
Bunq's AI assistant Finn, built on Amazon Bedrock with Claude models, handled about 97% of support interactions (82% fully automated) as of December 2025. But its EU banking license, deposit custody, and 2014 DNB charter remain human-regulated and cannot be replaced by AI.
Is Revolut a bigger threat to Bunq?
Yes. As of April 2026 comparisons, Revolut has 45 to 70 million-plus users versus Bunq's 20 million-plus by late 2025, plus a broader multi-currency, crypto, and investing feature set, making Revolut the dominant scaled peer in the same EU neobank category.
Is Bunq expanding into the US market?
Yes. FINRA approved Bunq's US broker-dealer license on October 27, 2025, letting US customers trade stocks and ETFs, and Bunq formally filed for a US OCC de novo banking license on January 7, 2026, targeting digital nomads.
How many employees does Bunq have?
Wikipedia's infobox, citing 2024 data, lists Bunq at 427 employees, a relatively small headcount for a bank serving over 20 million users by late 2025, reflecting its AI-heavy support and operations model.
