The call

Cashfree has the licenses that keep outsiders out, but Razorpay has the same licenses and more scale, so the fight is entirely against a peer, not a distant giant or an AI model.

Cashfree processes payments for Indian businesses and handles money transfers across borders. The Indian government's strict payment licenses keep out foreign companies and AI tools, but Razorpay holds the exact same licenses and is already larger. Cashfree just turned profitable in early 2026 after flat sales for two years, but this profit is unaudited and only one quarter old; the company is betting it can triple its revenue while keeping Razorpay from stealing its cross-border business, which would make up a quarter of future income. The thing that matters most: whether Cashfree can actually grow its cross-border money transfer business faster than Razorpay, now that Razorpay entered that space in late 2025.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Payments routing needs bank rails and licenses, not language models, so AI labs have no direct path in. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Razorpay. Razorpay is larger, holds the same RBI licenses, and grabbed a matching cross-border license in Dec 2025 to chase the same revenue. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. RBI licenses for payment aggregation, cross-border payments, and prepaid instruments that took years to get and block new entrants cold.

Questions people ask
Is Cashfree Payments profitable in 2026?
Cashfree reported hitting monthly EBITDA profitability in March 2026 after FY26 revenue reached roughly Rs 1,000 crore, per a May 25, 2026 Economic Times report. This follows FY25's Rs 154 crore net loss and Rs 131 crore EBITDA loss, so full-year profitability is still unproven and the figure is company-reported, not yet audited.
Who owns Cashfree Payments?
Cashfree is privately held and venture-backed, founded by Akash Sinha and Reeju Datta in 2015. Investors include Y Combinator, Apis Partners, State Bank of India, and Krafton, which led a $53 million Series C in February 2025 valuing the company at about $700 million, per TechCrunch, February 10, 2025.
Is Cashfree Payments laying off employees?
Third-party headcount trackers show Cashfree's staff count declining modestly alongside falling job postings even as FY26 revenue grew, consistent with an efficiency push tied to its EBITDA-profitability drive, according to workforce data reported in 2025 and 2026, though Cashfree has not announced formal layoffs.
Could AI replace Cashfree Payments?
AI can automate fraud detection, KYC checks, and reconciliation, but Cashfree holds RBI Payment Aggregator, cross-border PA-CB, and PPI licenses that AI models cannot themselves hold. Cashfree launched its own 'Cashfree Here' AI-chat payments product with Mastercard and Swiggy in February 2026, positioning itself inside agentic commerce rather than being displaced by it.
Who is Cashfree Payments' biggest competitor?
Razorpay is Cashfree's closest direct rival, a similarly full-stack Bengaluru payments company that obtained its own RBI cross-border PA-CB license in December 2025, directly matching Cashfree's earlier July 2024 first-mover license and threatening the cross-border segment Cashfree expects to become about 25% of future revenue.
Will Cashfree Payments go public (IPO)?
Co-founder Reeju Datta said in May 2026 that Cashfree is targeting an IPO within roughly three years, contingent on scaling revenue from about Rs 1,000 crore to Rs 3,000 to 4,000 crore, with a Series D raise of over $100 million planned in FY27 as likely the last private round beforehand.
