The call

Cellulant built the wiring rivals can't copy fast, but it's running that wiring on empty tanks while better funded competitors circle its biggest customers.

Cellulant lets businesses and people in Africa send money and pay bills across borders by connecting to banks, mobile money services, and payment networks in 35+ countries. It is hard to copy because it holds government licenses and has built relationships with 250+ banks and 60+ mobile money operators over more than a decade, plus big customers like Emirates and PepsiCo trust it with their transactions. But Flutterwave and Paystack are bigger, better funded, and doing the same thing in the same markets. Cellulant has also lost money, gone through three leaders in five years, and cut its staff by one quarter since 2023, which makes it weaker even though its licenses and contracts are real. The one thing that could turn it around is landing fresh cash from investors at a fair price in the next year, and whether the new leadership team can keep the job and actually expand payments across more countries without falling apart again.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI mostly helps here, powering fraud detection and reconciliation, but doesn't touch licenses or bank hookups that take years to build. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Flutterwave and Paystack (owned by Stripe). Flutterwave's fresh Nigerian banking license and Stripe-backed Paystack both chase the same enterprise deals with far more cash behind them. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 35+ country licenses, 250+ bank links, and 60+ mobile money hookups that took over a decade to wire together and can't be bought overnight.
What would change this call
Cellulant announces a new funding round (Series D or equivalent) within 12 months. Would show investors still back the company despite no institutional capital since 2018.
Emirates, Bolt, or PepsiCo contracts renew, expand, or shift to Flutterwave/Paystack. Would reveal whether flagship enterprise logos are staying or defecting to better-funded rivals.
New CFO/COO/CPTO (hired Feb-Apr 2026) remain in post past 12 months without further departures. Would indicate leadership has stabilized after three CEO changes since 2021.

Questions people ask
Is Cellulant profitable in 2026?
Cellulant states it reached profitability in 2024, a claim repeated in its March 2026 announcement introducing new CFO Darren Makarem. No audited financials have been published to verify this, and the company has not disclosed revenue figures publicly as of March 2026.
Who is Cellulant's biggest competitor?
Flutterwave, valued around $3B and operating in 34+ African markets, is Cellulant's closest rival, having added a Nigerian Micro Finance Banking license in April 2026. Paystack, owned by Stripe since 2020, also competes directly in Cellulant's core East African markets.
Has Cellulant raised new funding recently?
No new institutional funding has been publicly reported since Cellulant's $47.5M Series C led by TPG Growth's Rise Fund in May 2018. A planned ~$100M Series D announced in 2022 was shelved in 2023 amid company-wide restructuring and layoffs.
Could AI replace Cellulant?
AI is automating fraud detection and reconciliation across the payments industry, and rivals Paystack and Flutterwave already run branded fraud systems. But Cellulant's moat is its 35+ country payment licenses and 250+ bank integrations, regulatory infrastructure AI tools cannot replicate.
Did Cellulant lay off employees?
Yes. Cellulant conducted three rounds of layoffs in 2023: 27 employees in early 2023, a 20% workforce cut in August 2023, and a third round in December 2023 or January 2024, tied to a shift toward a product-focused strategy.
What is Cellulant's flagship product?
Tingg is Cellulant's single-API payments platform, launched in 2019 as a rebrand of its earlier consumer app Mula. It handles collections and payouts via mobile money, cards, bank transfers, and USSD across 35+ African countries as of 2024.
