The call

Certn has real regulatory cover but is shrinking headcount while much bigger rivals consolidate the same protected market around it.

Certn runs a background-check service for employers and landlords in Canada, mostly doing tenant screening. The business is hard to copy or replace because it needs government licenses, must follow strict privacy laws, and has relationships with data sources that take time to build, which is why AI alone cannot do what Certn does. However, bigger competitors like Checkr, First Advantage, and HireRight already have these same protections and far more money and customers, so Certn's size gives it no real edge. The one thing that could change everything is the outcome of the Canadian privacy investigation launched in June 2024: if regulators find Certn broke privacy rules, it could damage the trust and legal standing that makes its business work at all.

Why
01
Bigger players: First Advantage (post-Sterling), HireRight, Checkr. Checkr runs near $800M revenue and First Advantage's Sterling deal plus HireRight's PE backing are consolidating the market around Certn. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
02
What protects it. FCRA and CRA licensing plus built-up data relationships make swapping screening vendors slow and legally risky for clients.

Questions people ask
Is Certn profitable in 2026?
Certn does not publicly disclose audited revenue or profitability. Third-party estimates for 2022 revenue vary widely ($30M to $84.5M) and conflict, so no verified profitability figure exists. The company raised a $30M bridge round with BDC Capital in February 2025, suggesting it was not yet self-sustaining.
Could AI replace Certn's background check service?
Not directly. Certn operates under FCRA-equivalent consumer reporting regulations and licensed criminal/credit data access across 200+ countries, a compliance wall pure AI models cannot bypass. However, Certn itself uses AI for identity verification and reference-check summarization, and states as of May 2025 it does not use AI for hire/no-hire decisions.
Who owns Certn?
Certn is privately held and venture-backed, founded in 2016 in Victoria, BC by Andrew McLeod, Evan Dalton, and Owen Madrick. Investors include Tribe Capital, Inovia Capital, B Capital, Telstra Ventures, Export Development Canada, and BDC Capital, with cumulative funding exceeding $114M USD as of April 2023.
Is Certn laying off staff?
No confirmed layoffs are publicly documented. Certn's own December 2024 blog cited 'over 400 Certonians' across 13 countries. However, President Sarah Miller Wright departed after less than a year in January 2025, a leadership turnover signal worth watching.
Who are Certn's biggest competitors?
Certn competes against much larger rivals Checkr, First Advantage, and HireRight. First Advantage closed a $2.2B acquisition of Sterling Check on October 31, 2024, and HireRight was taken private by General Atlantic and Stone Point Capital for $1.65B on June 28, 2024, consolidating the market around bigger players.
Has Certn raised funding recently?
Yes. On February 19, 2025, Certn, alongside a company called Quadshift, secured $30M from BDC Capital's Growth Venture Fund to expand AI-powered background checks, following a $30M USD Series B extension in April 2023 that valued Certn at roughly $450M post-money.
