The call

Character.AI still has millions of users and characters, but cost cuts, safety rules, and free alternatives from bigger labs are wearing that base down.

Character.AI lets people chat with AI characters that roleplay as anything the user wants. It was hard to copy because the company let users create unfiltered conversations, but Google, OpenAI, and Meta have now built similar or better chat features into their own apps, and smaller competitors like Nomi AI and Candy AI offer better memory and voice features for less money. The company cut costs by using cheaper AI models and adding ads, which made users angry (ratings dropped to 1.3 out of 5 stars), so the real question is whether regulators will force even stricter rules on teen chat apps, which could make the whole business unprofitable.

Why
01
AI pressure: Cheaper, less-filtered rivals (Nomi AI, Candy AI, Talkie, Janitor AI) plus informal use of ChatGPT as a companion. Reviewers rank rivals higher on memory, voice, and visuals; Character.AI's own MAUs slid from 28M to 20M as filters tightened. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Google, OpenAI, Meta AI. Google licensed the founders' tech and hired them back; OpenAI and Meta now offer companion-style chat inside products people already use. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A large existing library of user-made characters and roughly 20M monthly users give it more scale than smaller companion apps, for now.
