The call

Checkr sits on regulatory and integration lock-in that keeps it profitable at $800M revenue, while consolidating legacy rivals and a widening gap between its private valuation and secondary pricing sit as open questions.

Checkr runs a background-check business for companies that hire gig workers like Uber and DoorDash drivers. It is hard to copy because the government requires special licenses to do this work, Checkr is baked into over 200 hiring software systems, and gig platforms rely on it daily, so switching costs real money and time. The real threat is not AI or new startups, but older background-check companies like First Advantage and Accurate that just merged or partnered with each other and are now moving faster to build competing technology that could convince gig platforms to jump ship.

Why
01
Bigger players: First Advantage plus Sterling (merged Oct 2024), Accurate Background plus Orange Tree. Newly merged legacy rivals are consolidating scale and could ship a faster API product that pulls gig-platform customers away from Checkr. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
02
What protects it. FCRA regulatory status, 200+ ATS and HRIS integrations, and deep workflow lock-in with gig platforms are hard to copy fast.
What would change this call
First Advantage+Sterling or Accurate+Orange Tree launches an API-first product and lands a named gig-platform client. Would show the incumbent threat has materialized into real share loss for Checkr.
Checkr loses Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Instacart, or Airbnb as a background-check customer. Would confirm a marquee anchor customer defection, undercutting workflow lock-in claims.
Checkr files an S-1 or its secondary-market valuation moves further from the $5B primary round. Would reveal real growth rate and whether investor confidence is deteriorating.
