Chindata Group
China/APAC data center operator supplying AI-compute capacity to hyperscalers.
The data centers are real and profitable, but no audited numbers since 2023 and one customer at 86% of revenue leave the ownership story unresolved.
Chindata Group owns and operates data centers in China, renting server space primarily to ByteDance (which was about 86% of its business in 2022). The company built real physical assets like buildings, power systems, and cooling technology that are hard to copy, and benefits from growing demand for AI computing power. However, the business is not a safe bet for investors because one customer (ByteDance) controls most revenue, the company has changed hands three times since going public in 2020, and we have not seen audited financial reports since late 2023 when it stopped listing in the U.S., which makes it impossible to know if the business is actually growing or shrinking right now. The only number that matters going forward is whether ByteDance renews its contracts with Chindata and on what terms, because if ByteDance builds its own data centers or switches providers, Chindata could lose most of its revenue overnight.
HEC (Guangdong HEC/Shenzhen Dongyangguang) publishes consolidated Chindata financials in 2026-2027 filings. Restores audited transparency lost since Dec 2023 delisting.
Any further change-of-control, IPO signal, or secondary sale of Chindata within 12-24 months. Would indicate ownership instability continuing beyond the 2026 HEC deal.
- Revenue ~$783M, ~52% EBITDA margin
- ByteDance was 86% of 2022 revenue
- HEC-led consortium closed $4B buyout
- ByteDance concentration at ~86% of 2022 revenue creates single-customer dependency.
- No audited financials disclosed since December 2023 delisting, leaving post-2023 figures unverified.
- Third ownership change in six years (IPO to Bain to HEC-led consortium, Jan 2026) with no announced strategy or exit.
- China AI chip export controls and domestic GPU substitution could alter customer demand patterns.
- Active capex on new AI campuses (Hubei, Shaoguan, Ulanqab) exposed to delay or cost overrun.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| GDS Holdings | contesting | GDS held ~24.9% historical China colocation share and grew revenue 11% YoY as of FY25 (2026-05-19) |
| VNET (21Vianet) | contesting | Direct Chinese carrier-neutral colocation peer competing for hyperscale tenants |
| Alibaba Cloud, Tencent Cloud, Huawei Cloud, Baidu AI Cloud | gaining on | Together hold ~71% of China public-cloud revenue and can self-build data centers, per 2026-01-21 report |
| ByteDance (in-house compute) | losing to | 86% customer concentration in 2022 means any in-house shift by ByteDance directly cuts Chindata revenue |
- Is Chindata Group profitable in 2026?
- No verified 2026 figures exist. Chindata delisted in December 2023 after reporting 10 consecutive profitable quarters, with Q2 2023 revenue of RMB 1,553.8M and adjusted EBITDA margin around 52.5%. No audited financials have been published since the 2023 delisting.
- Who owns Chindata Group now?
- As of January 16, 2026, Chindata's China operations are owned by a consortium led by Shenzhen Dongyangguang Industry Co (parent of Guangdong HEC Technology Holding), after Bain Capital completed a $4 billion sale of the business, per Bain Capital's own announcement.
- Could AI replace Chindata Group's business?
- No. Chindata builds and operates physical data centers, holding IDC operating licenses, land and power allocations, and 493 patents as of mid-2023. Its business is a direct beneficiary of AI compute demand growth, not a target for AI automation.
- Is Chindata Group a safe company to join?
- Risky. ByteDance made up about 86% of Chindata's 2022 revenue per Fitch Ratings, ownership has changed three times since 2020 (IPO, Bain buyout, HEC-led sale in January 2026), and no audited financials have existed since the December 2023 delisting.
- Who is Chindata Group's biggest competitor?
- GDS Holdings and VNET (21Vianet) are Chindata's direct Chinese hyperscale colocation peers; GDS held roughly 24.9% historical share of the mainland carrier-neutral market and posted 11% YoY revenue growth as of FY25 reported May 19, 2026.
- How much is Chindata Group worth?
- Chindata was valued at about $4.9 billion at its September 2020 Nasdaq IPO, then taken private by Bain Capital in August 2023 for about $3.16 billion, and sold again to an HEC-led consortium for about $4 billion, completed January 16, 2026.
