The call

Chroma won the open-source download race but has gone over three years without new funding while better-capitalized rivals raise and expand, leaving its paid Cloud business the only untested path forward.

Chroma is a database that helps AI systems find and use information quickly. It started as free software that many developers use (15 million times per month), but now sells a paid version called Chroma Cloud. The problem is that this type of database is becoming a standard feature in software many people already use, like MongoDB and Elasticsearch, so customers can get similar tools without paying extra. Meanwhile, new AI models can hold so much information in memory that they need less help from specialized search databases. The biggest question is whether Chroma Cloud customers will actually pay for it and stick around, since the product just launched in August 2025 and the company has not raised new money since 2023 while competitors raised hundreds of millions of dollars.

Why
01
AI pressure: Long-context LLMs and Anthropic's MCP protocol. Million-token context windows and standard context protocols cut demand for dedicated retrieval databases like Chroma. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: pgvector, MongoDB Atlas, Elasticsearch, Google Vertex Vector Search. Free or bundled vector search inside databases people already run covers most workloads under 10 million vectors, pgvector alone fits about 70 percent of cases. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 15 million monthly downloads and deep hooks into LangChain and LlamaIndex make Chroma the default open-source pick developers reach for first.
What would change this call
Chroma announces a Series A/B funding round within the next year. Shows investors still back its ability to compete against better-funded rivals.
Chroma Cloud discloses revenue or customer count beyond the four named launch customers. Shows its paid product is gaining real commercial traction.
Qdrant or Pinecone announce new enterprise deals or regional expansions. Shows better-funded rivals pulling ahead on scale and reach.
Key numbers
  • No funding round since $18M seed, April 2023 (2026-07)
  • Qdrant raised $50M Series A (2026-03)
  • 15M+ monthly downloads, 27k GitHub stars (2026-07)
Named risks
  • No new funding round since April 2023, over 3 years, in a fast-moving capital-intensive category. Severity: high
  • Core embedding/vector search function commoditized by pgvector and hyperscaler-native offerings. Severity: high
  • Chroma Cloud revenue unverified and product is under one year old (GA August 2025). Severity: medium
  • Long-context LLMs and MCP standard may reduce demand for dedicated retrieval infrastructure. Severity: medium
  • Small team of ~20-30 employees competing against better-funded rivals racing on regions and features. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Chroma profitable in 2026?
No public revenue or profitability figures exist for Chroma as of mid-2026. The company monetizes via Chroma Cloud, GA since August 17, 2025, priced at $2.50 per logical GiB written plus metered storage, but has disclosed only four named production customers: Factory, Weights & Biases, Propel, and Foam.
Has Chroma raised a Series A?
No. As of May 2026, Chroma had not announced a Series A or Series B, per AI Wiki. Its last disclosed round was an $18M seed in April 2023 at roughly a $75M valuation, giving it $20.3M total disclosed funding as of July 20, 2026, a notably long gap for a hot AI infra category.
Who owns Chroma?
Chroma is a privately held, venture-backed company with no parent, founded in 2022 by CEO Jeff Huber and CTO Anton Troynikov. It raised a $2.3M pre-seed in May 2022 and an $18M seed round in April 2023, remaining independent as of mid-2026 with roughly 20-30 employees.
Could AI make Chroma's vector database obsolete?
Partly. Frontier long-context models like Llama 4 Scope (~10M tokens) and GPT-4.1 (~1M tokens), plus Anthropic's Model Context Protocol, reduce reliance on dedicated retrieval infrastructure as of February 2026. Meanwhile pgvector already serves as the default for about 70% of sub-10M-vector agent workloads per an April 28, 2026 comparison.
Who is Chroma's biggest competitor?
Pinecone and Qdrant are the sharpest funded threats: Pinecone raised over $138M at a $750M valuation by mid-2023, and Qdrant closed a reported $50M Series A around March 2026. Both dwarf Chroma's $20.3M total disclosed funding as of July 2026, pressuring Chroma on enterprise features and regional coverage.
What is Chroma Cloud and when did it launch?
Chroma Cloud is Chroma's fully managed, serverless vector database service, reaching general availability on August 17, 2025. Pricing is consumption-based at $2.50 per logical GiB written plus roughly $0.02/GB/month storage, and it currently runs in just two regions, AWS us-east-1 and GCP europe-west1, as of June 23, 2026.
