The call

Circle holds the regulatory paperwork and the biggest USDC pipes, but the same partners it depends on for distribution just built a cheaper alternative next door.

Circle is a company that creates and manages USDC, a digital currency backed by real dollars in the bank. It makes money by earning interest on those dollars before paying it out. The problem is that Stripe, Visa, Coinbase, BlackRock, and other huge companies just launched their own stablecoin called Open USD with a better deal for customers, and Coinbase (which sells most of Circle's stablecoins) is now backing this rival instead. The one thing that could save Circle is if its August 2026 deal with Coinbase keeps that huge distribution channel loyal, but that negotiation looks like a coin flip.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI agent payment tools (Stripe agentic commerce, OpenAI agent checkout). AI agents that auto-pick stablecoins for machine payments could default to whatever coin their platform backs, favoring Open USD over USDC. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Open USD consortium (Stripe, Visa, Coinbase, BlackRock, Mastercard, Google). 140+ firms launched Open USD on June 30, 2026 with profit-sharing that undercuts Circle's reserve-income take rate, and Coinbase now backs it too. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. OCC national trust bank charter (July 2026) and USDC's 63% share of stablecoin transaction volume give it regulatory standing rivals lack.

Whether Circle's Arc mainnet ships before Q4 2026 with real developer activity. Shows if Circle's infrastructure bet can compete with Stripe/Paradigm's live Tempo chain.
OUSD's measurable transaction volume and issuer adoption over the next 6-12 months. Shows whether the consortium model is gaining real share or just press coverage.

Questions people ask
Is Circle profitable in 2026?
Circle posted $694M total revenue and reserve income in Q1 2026, up 20% YoY, with Adjusted EBITDA of $151M (up 24% YoY) as of March 31, 2026, per its own earnings report dated May 11, 2026. Revenue missed consensus estimates by 2.9%, but the company remains cash-flow positive on reserve income.
Could AI replace Circle's business?
No, stablecoin issuance requires bank charters and regulatory licenses AI cannot obtain. Circle received OCC final approval for a national trust bank on July 10, 2026. Internally, CEO Jeremy Allaire said 85% of staff use AI tools weekly as of May 2026, but AI automates workflows, not the licensed issuance itself.
Who owns Circle?
Circle Internet Group is publicly traded on NYSE under ticker CRCL, with no parent company. It IPO'd June 5, 2025 at $31/share, raising about $1.1B at a $6.9B valuation. As of July 20, 2026, shares trade around $60 to $67, roughly 75% below their 2025 peak near $300.
Is Circle losing ground to Coinbase or Open USD?
Coinbase, Circle's largest distributor, is now backing rival consortium Open USD, launched June 30, 2026 with 140+ firms including Stripe, Visa, and BlackRock. Coinbase's revenue-share deal with Circle is up for renegotiation in August 2026, a decision that could squeeze Circle's take-rate on its $77B USDC float.
What is Circle's biggest competitor?
Tether's USDT holds roughly 62% of stablecoin market cap versus Circle's USDC at about 25%, as of June 30, 2026. The newer threat is the 140+ firm Open USD consortium (Stripe, Visa, Coinbase, BlackRock, Mastercard), launched June 30, 2026, which directly undercuts Circle's reserve-yield revenue model.
Are there layoffs at Circle?
No layoffs are documented; instead Circle grew headcount to about 2,194 employees by December 2025, up 10.6% YoY per Revelio Labs. CEO Jeremy Allaire has warned publicly (May 11, 2026) that AI-driven layoffs across the industry are 'only the tip of the iceberg,' though this applies industry-wide, not specifically to Circle's own staffing cuts.
