The call

Cisco is selling more gear than ever, much of it into the AI buildout, while losing ground in the exact switching niche that buildout runs on.

Cisco sells networking equipment and software that connects computers in data centers and businesses worldwide. The company has deep roots: most large companies have been using Cisco gear for decades, their salespeople have long relationships with customers, and switching to a different vendor is risky and expensive. However, in the fast-growing area of artificial intelligence data centers, newer competitors like NVIDIA and Arista are now winning contracts that Cisco used to get, which means Cisco's growth in its hottest market is slowing down. The one thing that could change everything is if big tech companies stop spending massive amounts of money on AI infrastructure, which would hurt NVIDIA and Arista more than Cisco's older, stable business.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is a customer for Cisco, not a hunter. Hyperscaler AI orders hit ~$9B in FY26, 4.5x prior year. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: NVIDIA (Spectrum-X) and Arista Networks. NVIDIA Spectrum-X hit 25.9% of data-center Ethernet switching, up 647% YoY, and Arista now outsells Cisco in high-speed DC switches. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Forty years of enterprise network lock-in, a huge reseller channel, and Splunk data that customers cannot easily rip out.
What would change this call
IDC quarterly data-center Ethernet switch share report shows NVIDIA/Arista share trend versus Cisco. Confirms whether Cisco is losing or holding ground in high-speed DC switching.
Cisco's hyperscaler AI infrastructure orders for FY27 come in below the ~$6B guided floor. Would show hyperscaler AI demand softening, undercutting the growth narrative.
Additional WARN notices or restructuring charges beyond the $1B disclosed for FY26/FY27. Would indicate deeper cost pressure or slower-than-expected software transition.
Key numbers
  • FY26 revenue guided to $62.8B-$63.0B (2026-05-13)
  • Hyperscaler AI orders ~$9B FY26, 4.5x FY25 (2026-05-13)
  • NVIDIA Spectrum-X share 25.9%, up 647% YoY (2026-05-13)
Named risks
  • NVIDIA Spectrum-X and Arista continue taking share in the fastest-growing AI datacenter switching segment. Severity: high
  • Restructuring cadence continues beyond the announced ~$1B charge, with more WARN-filed cuts targeting software engineers. Severity: medium
  • Heavy dependence on a small number of hyperscaler customers for AI-infrastructure order growth underpinning the stock rally. Severity: high
  • Splunk's on-prem-to-cloud revenue-recognition transition drags on reported overall revenue growth. Severity: medium
  • Supreme Court ruling in Cisco Systems v. Doe I could set corporate liability precedent under the Alien Tort Statute. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Cisco Systems profitable in 2026?
Yes. Cisco posted record Q3 FY2026 revenue of $15.8B (up 12% YoY) with GAAP EPS of $0.85, up 37% YoY, as of the quarter ended April 25, 2026. FY2026 revenue guidance was raised to $62.8B-$63.0B on May 13, 2026, driven partly by hyperscaler AI infrastructure orders.
Is Cisco laying off employees in 2026?
Yes. Cisco announced cuts of fewer than 4,000 jobs (about 5% of its roughly 86,200-person workforce) on May 14, 2026, costing up to $1B pre-tax. Follow-on WARN filings show 471 California layoffs, hitting software engineers hardest, effective mid-July 2026.
Could AI replace Cisco's core networking business?
Unlikely to replace it; AI is mostly a demand driver. Cisco guided FY26 hyperscaler AI infrastructure orders to roughly $9B (4.5x FY25 levels) as of May 13, 2026. AI compresses routine monitoring labor, which Cisco captures via its own Splunk and Cisco IQ tools rather than losing to third parties.
Who is Cisco's biggest competitor in AI networking?
NVIDIA's Spectrum-X is the sharpest threat in datacenter Ethernet switching, holding 25.9% share (up 647% YoY) per IDC Q2 2025 data, surpassing Cisco in that specific segment even though Cisco still led the overall Ethernet market with 27.3% share. Arista Networks and HPE-Juniper are also gaining.
Who owns Cisco Systems?
Cisco is an independent publicly traded company with no parent, listed on Nasdaq as CSCO, part of the Dow Jones Industrial Average since June 2009. Its market capitalization was roughly $432-461 billion as of mid-to-late July 2026.
Did Cisco's Splunk acquisition pay off?
Splunk data now feeds Nexus Dashboard, AppDynamics, ThousandEyes, and Security Cloud, and Cisco's Q3 FY2026 subscription revenue reached $7.8B (49% of total revenue) as of the quarter ended April 25, 2026. However, the CFO flagged Splunk's on-prem-to-cloud transition as a near-term drag on reported revenue growth.
