The call

Cisco is growing on AI-buildout orders while cutting thousands of jobs, with NVIDIA and Arista both circling the same networking dollars.

Cisco makes the equipment that connects computers in data centers and keeps networks running securely. It is hard to replace because companies have Cisco gear everywhere, rely on it daily, and switching would cost a lot of time and money. However, Arista is taking some customers in data centers, NVIDIA could decide to build competing networking products instead of just working with Cisco, and companies are using AI to do support work that Cisco employees used to do, which cuts into profits. The biggest unknown is whether NVIDIA stays a partner or becomes a rival, and whether the huge cloud companies keep spending as much on network equipment as they do now.

Why
01
AI pressure: NVIDIA (Spectrum-X switching and Silicon One-class chips). NVIDIA already makes the AI chips and now ships its own networking gear, and could route around Cisco entirely if it chooses to compete instead of partner. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Arista Networks. Arista's switches are already live inside many hyperscaler and enterprise AI clusters, competing head-on for the same buildout dollars. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Decades of routers and switches already wired into corporate networks, plus Splunk's security data, make ripping Cisco out costly and slow.
What would change this call
NVIDIA releases its own switch/networking reference designs competing directly with Cisco Silicon One. Would show NVIDIA shifting from co-engineering partner to direct rival in AI networking.
Arista Networks reports data-center switching revenue or share growth in quarterly filings. Would confirm Arista is capturing AI-era switching demand Cisco is targeting.
Cisco's hyperscaler AI-order growth decelerates in two consecutive quarters versus its ~$9B FY2026 target. Would show the AI-infrastructure narrative weakening under customer concentration risk.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue $56.7B, up 5% year over year (2025-08-13)
  • AI infrastructure orders from hyperscalers, ~$9B expected FY2026 (2026-05-13)
  • Cisco cutting nearly 4,000 jobs despite raised revenue guidance (2026-05-13)
Named risks
  • AI infrastructure order growth concentrated in a small number of hyperscaler customers. Severity: high
  • NVIDIA could shift from co-engineering partner to direct competitor in AI networking. Severity: high
  • Layoffs alongside record revenue draw AI-washing scrutiny over restructuring motives. Severity: medium
  • Arista and HPE-Juniper continue taking share in switching and campus networking. Severity: medium
  • Pending Cisco v. Doe surveillance liability case could set costly legal precedent. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Cisco profitable in 2026?
Yes. Cisco posted Q3 FY2026 revenue of $15.84B, up 11.9% year over year, reported May 13, 2026, and raised full-year FY2026 guidance to $62.8-$63.0B, up from $61.2-$61.7B, driven by AI infrastructure orders and networking growth.
Is Cisco laying off employees in 2026?
Yes. On May 13, 2026 Cisco announced a restructuring cutting fewer than 4,000 roles, under 5% of its workforce, with up to $1B in pre-tax charges, framed as reallocating investment toward AI, security, silicon and optics rather than pure cost savings.
Could AI replace Cisco's networking business?
Not the core hardware. Cisco's switches, routers, optics and Silicon One ASICs physically move network traffic, which AI software cannot substitute; but AI is already automating Tier-1 support and services roles, contributing to layoffs like the May 2026 cut of under 4,000 positions.
Who is Cisco's biggest competitor?
Arista Networks is the most cited live threat in data-center switching, having settled a $400M IP lawsuit with Cisco in 2018 and, per a July 22, 2026 report, holding the No.1 spot in data-center switching as NVIDIA's own networking ambitions grow nearby.
Did Cisco acquire Splunk?
Yes. Cisco completed its $28B acquisition of Splunk (about $157 per share) on March 18, 2024, its largest deal ever, adding SIEM, SOAR and observability tools; Splunk's ARR at the time was reported at $3.39-$3.64B.
Is NVIDIA a partner or a competitor to Cisco?
Currently a co-engineering partner: Cisco expanded its NVIDIA partnership Feb 25, 2025 combining Silicon One with Spectrum-X Ethernet, launched the joint N9100 switch Oct 28, 2025, but NVIDIA's growing networking silicon ambitions are widely flagged as a future competitive risk.
