The call

Civitai keeps a loyal open-source community that rivals can't legally copy, but one payment processor exit or one enforcement action could end its revenue.

Civitai lets four million users share and download customized AI image generation tools, especially ones that mainstream services like Adobe and Midjourney won't touch. The company's real strength is also its biggest problem: it allows adult content, which keeps users loyal but has already made Visa and Mastercard cut them off, and now regulators are targeting the same content through laws like the Take It Down Act. The one thing that could change everything is if their last remaining payment processor (a cryptocurrency company called NowPayments) drops them too, which could shut down their revenue in weeks.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI, Google, and Stability AI native fine-tuning tools. Frontier labs adding built-in character and style fine-tuning could make hobbyist LoRAs and Civitai's discovery layer redundant. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Visa and Mastercard. Visa and Mastercard cut off card payments in May 2025, forcing Civitai onto a single crypto processor for all revenue. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A 4M-user community and 320K+ community-trained checkpoints give it NSFW-tolerant content mainstream platforms are barred from hosting.
What would change this call
Civitai.com monthly traffic (Semrush/Similarweb) over the next two quarters. Continued decline would show creators and viewers migrating to rival platforms.
Whether NowPayments or a successor processor stays active for civitai.red through 2026. A processor cutoff would show payment infrastructure can't sustain the NSFW revenue model.
Creator activity levels after the August 31, 2026 payout model change to per-generation fees. A drop in published resources would show creators leaving for competitors with simpler payouts.

Questions people ask
Is Civitai profitable in 2026?
Civitai has not disclosed formal profitability figures. Its 2024 Transparency Report cites only $234.9K in salary spend (4.49% of total spend), and no new funding round has been reported since its $5.1M seed closed in June 2023, suggesting a capital-constrained, not clearly profitable, operation as of July 2026.
Is Civitai losing traffic?
Yes. Semrush recorded 11.05M monthly visits to civitai.com in June 2026, down 19.5% month-over-month and down from 18.95M in April 2026. Similarweb showed a declining global rank (6,158 to 6,915) as of July 2026, though the April 2026 domain split into civitai.com and civitai.red complicates the comparison.
What happened to Civitai's payment processing?
On May 23, 2025, Visa and Mastercard's processor terminated card payments to Civitai over NSFW content, forcing a pivot to cryptocurrency (USDC, USDT, ETH, Litecoin, and others) via NowPayments. As of July 2026 its NSFW domain civitai.red still relies on this single crypto processor for revenue.
Could AI replace Civitai?
Partly. Frontier labs like OpenAI, Google, and xAI are adding native fine-tuning and character consistency that could commoditize Civitai's hobbyist LoRA discovery layer. But its 320,300+ community-published models (2024) and NSFW tolerance, which mainstream labs avoid, remain harder for AI-native competitors to replicate directly.
Who owns Civitai?
Civitai is privately held, founded in November 2022 by Justin Maier (Maxfield Hulker cited as co-founder in some sources). It raised a $5.1M seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz, closing June 2023 and announced November 2023 at roughly a $20M valuation, with no further disclosed funding rounds through July 2026.
Is Civitai facing legal risk over deepfakes?
Yes. The U.S. Take It Down Act (signed 2025) and DEFIANCE Act (passed the Senate mid-January 2026) target NCII and deepfake content. A Stanford/Indiana University study cited February 2026 found deepfake-enabling files remained available on the platform despite existing bans.
