The call

Class survives on a locked-in base of Blackboard Collaborate schools while the platforms it runs on, Zoom and Microsoft Teams, build its own features for free.

Class Technologies built software that sits on top of Zoom and Microsoft Teams to help teachers run classes better, track student engagement, and grade assignments. The problem is that Microsoft and Zoom are now building these same features directly into their own platforms, so Class's customers don't need to pay extra anymore. The only thing keeping Class afloat is its 2022 purchase of Blackboard Collaborate, which serves about 1,400 schools and is baked into their existing systems, but that's a temporary shield. The big question is whether schools using Blackboard will stick around when Microsoft and Zoom's native tools get good enough, which could start to show up in renewal rates in 2026 and 2027.

Why
01
AI pressure: Microsoft Copilot for Education. Copilot now generates meeting recaps, rubrics, and transcripts natively inside Teams, copying Class's core features for free. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft (Teams/Copilot for Education) and Zoom's own native education features. Both platforms Class is built on now ship attendance, engagement tracking, and quiz tools directly, with no reason to hold back. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. The 2022 Blackboard Collaborate deal locked in about 1,400 institutions with LMS integrations that are slow to rip out.
