Cluely
Cluely sells an AI overlay that watches your screen and feeds you answers live.
Cluely started as a cheating tool too risky to keep, pivoted to a meeting-assistant category that Zoom and Microsoft now give away free.
Cluely sells software that records and summarizes meeting conversations. The problem is that Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet are all adding these same features directly into their apps for free, making Cluely's separate product unnecessary. A bigger problem is that the founder falsely claimed the company had $7 million in revenue when it really had about $5.2 million. This lie destroyed trust in any numbers the founder reported about how many customers they had or how fast they were growing. The one thing that could change this is if Cluely gets bought by a bigger company, or if it somehow raises new investment in the next few months, because not getting any new funding for over a year after their last funding round is a strong sign that investors have given up on the company.
Zoom AI Companion, Microsoft Copilot for Teams, or Google Meet Gemini adds equivalent live-assist features. Shows the native platforms are closing the gap Cluely relies on for its pivot.
SF Planning Commission issues a ruling on the July 2025 live-work zoning complaint. Would show whether regulatory action disrupts Cluely's operations.

| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet | losing to | Native AI meeting-notes features bundled free; Zoom AI Companion 2.0 shipped Oct 2024, Gemini notes in Meet June 2026 |
| Otter.ai | contesting | Established transcription incumbent since 2016 with ~$80M funding, now direct rival after Cluely's Nov 2025 pivot |
| Granola | contesting | Bot-free AI notepad popular with VCs, competing directly since Cluely's meeting-assistant pivot (Nov 2025) |
| Pickle (Glass clone) | losing to | Free open-source clone of Cluely built in four days, July 2025, showing low technical moat |
| Anti-cheating detectors (Truely, Talview/Alvy) | losing to | Tools explicitly trained to catch Cluely, eroding its original interview-cheating niche since 2025-10 |
- Is Cluely profitable in 2026?
- No profitability has been disclosed. CEO Roy Lee publicly admitted on March 5, 2026 that his earlier $7M ARR claim was fabricated, with Stripe screenshots showing actual revenue closer to $5.2M, undermining any profitability narrative.
- Could AI replace Cluely?
- Cluely's own product is a thin overlay on top of foundation-model APIs. A free open-source clone called Glass was built by YC startup Pickle in four days in July 2025, and founder Roy Lee said in November 2025 the company's future depends on how fast AI models improve.
- Who is Cluely's biggest competitor?
- After pivoting from interview-cheating to generic meeting notes by November 2025, Cluely now competes with Otter.ai (founded 2016, ~$80M funding) and Granola, while Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet bundle similar AI note-taking natively for free.
- Who owns or funds Cluely?
- Cluely is privately venture-backed. It raised a $5.3M seed co-led by Abstract Ventures and Susa Ventures (April 21, 2025) and a $15M Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz (June 20, 2025), totaling about $20.3M disclosed funding as of July 2026.
- Did Cluely lie about its revenue?
- Yes. CEO Roy Lee publicly admitted on X on March 5, 2026 that his earlier claim of $7M ARR by mid-2025 was fabricated; Stripe screenshots he posted showed actual revenue closer to $5.2M.
- What happened to Cluely's original 'cheat on everything' product?
- Cluely dropped explicit cheating language by late April 2025 after backlash, added an enterprise product in June 2025, and by November 2025 had fully repositioned as a generic AI meeting assistant competing with Otter.ai and Granola.
