The call

Compal's PC business keeps shrinking while its AI-server bet is real but still unproven against bigger rivals chasing the same NVIDIA slots.

Compal Electronics manufactures computer components and servers for big tech companies, including AI servers for NVIDIA. The company is profitable but earns only 1.4 cents on every dollar of sales, making it hard to invest heavily in new technology or weather competition from larger rivals like Quanta and Foxconn, which can do the same work more efficiently. The traditional PC business is shrinking fast, so Compal's future depends entirely on whether it can grab a big slice of the fast-growing AI server market in 2026 and beyond, but this has not yet happened at the scale management promised.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is feeding Compal, not eating it: NVIDIA-linked AI server orders are the only growth line offsetting a shrinking PC business. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Quanta Computer and Foxconn (Hon Hai). Both already ship competing AI-server designs at larger scale and are chasing the same NVIDIA reference-platform slots Compal needs. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 42 years of ODM relationships and existing NVIDIA design wins let Compal compete for AI-server business at all, even without scale edge.
What would change this call
Compal's H1 2026 results show AI-server revenue exceeding 10% of total sales. Confirms the AI-server growth bet is materializing as management guided.
Foxconn or Quanta announced as designated ODM on next-gen NVIDIA reference platforms, excluding Compal. Shows rivals capturing key AI-server design wins Compal is missing.
Compal's operating margin stays at or below 1.4% despite server revenue growth in 2026. Indicates AI-server ramp is commodity-priced, not improving profitability.

Questions people ask
Is Compal Electronics profitable in 2026?
Yes but thinly. Compal posted a 1.4% operating margin for FY2025 (down from 1.6% in 2024) and still paid an NT$1.1/share dividend (80% payout) approved at its May 29, 2026 AGM. Q1 2026 revenue rose 5% QoQ to NT$201.3 billion, but margins remain razor thin.
Could AI replace Compal Electronics?
No. Compal's business is physical server rack integration and liquid cooling for NVIDIA HGX/MGX/Rubin platforms, work AI models cannot perform. AI demand is actually Compal's growth driver: it showed HGX Rubin NVL8 systems at GTC 2026 (March 2026) and Vera Rubin racks at COMPUTEX 2026 (June 2026).
Who is Compal Electronics' biggest competitor?
Quanta Computer, the larger notebook ODM, is more aggressive and further along in the same hyperscaler AI-server pivot as of a February 2026 industry analysis. Foxconn (Hon Hai), the world's largest EMS, is also building a growing AI-server direct business that competes with Compal.
Is Compal Electronics shrinking or growing?
Mixed. FY2025 consolidated revenue fell 17% YoY to NT$757.5 billion as PC unit shipments dropped from 32.3 million to 28.0 million. But Q1 2026 revenue grew 5% QoQ to NT$201.3 billion, with non-PC revenue (servers, automotive, healthcare) reaching 35% of sales, up from 29% in FY2025.
Who owns Compal Electronics?
Compal is publicly traded on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (ticker 2324, listed since Feb 18, 1992) with no single controlling parent. Jui-Tsung 'Ray' Chen became Chairman and Anthony 'Tony' Bonadero became President and CEO effective May 31, 2024, succeeding former chairman Sheng-Hsiung Hsu.
Is Compal Electronics laying off workers?
Compal's own 2024 ESG labor index reported 36,122 total employees as of December 31, 2024, spread across Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Brazil, US and Mexico. The company has not disclosed a formal layoff program, but its core PC business shrank 17% YoY in FY2025, pressuring headcount needs long term.
