The call

Kit still leads creator email on retention and revenue, but a price hike and Beehiiv's community and AI push are testing whether that lead holds.

ConvertKit is an email service built specifically for writers, podcasters, and online creators to send newsletters and make money. The company is profitable and owns relationships with its users because switching email platforms is annoying and risky, but growth has slowed to just 14% per year, and a recent price increase might push customers away. Beehiiv, a newer competitor backed by venture investors, just added community features, AI writing tools, and ad networks directly into the creator workflow, which are things ConvertKit customers had to build separately before. The real test in the next year is whether ConvertKit's customers stay loyal after paying more, or whether Beehiiv's faster growth and newer features pull them away.

Why
01
AI pressure: Beehiiv AI Copilot. AI writing and campaign tools inside rival platforms lower the skill needed to run email, chipping at Kit's expertise edge. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Intuit Mailchimp. Mailchimp has scale and creator-adjacent tools but hasn't shown creator-segment feature velocity yet. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Creators' subscriber lists and sending history live inside Kit, and migrating that plus automations is slow and risky.
What would change this call
Kit's net dollar retention over the two quarters following the September 2025 price hike. A drop below 100% would show the price increase is pushing customers out.
Beehiiv's ARR growth relative to Kit's growth rate through 2026. Beehiiv crossing $40M while Kit stays in low teens would show a peer overtaking the leader.
Whether Kit ships a community feature and how NDR responds afterward. A community launch holding NDR above 105% would show the moat still compounds.
Key numbers
  • $43M ARR, 14% YoY growth (2025-04-17)
  • 99.5% net dollar retention (2025-04-17)
  • 34% price hike on base plan, Sept 2025 (2026-03-25)
Named risks
  • 34% price hike (Sept 2025) could push net dollar retention below 100%. Severity: medium
  • Beehiiv's Community and AI Copilot features erode Kit's differentiation with no community layer of its own. Severity: high
  • Growth stalled at 14% YoY (2024) while VC-backed peer ships faster. Severity: medium
  • Conflicting employee counts (85 vs ~149) suggest unclear headcount trajectory. Severity: low
  • No institutional capital to fund rapid feature response if competitive pressure accelerates. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is ConvertKit (Kit) profitable in 2026?
Kit has never raised venture capital and is described as bootstrapped, per a May 2025 founder interview. Sacra estimated ARR of about $43M in 2024 with 99.5% net dollar retention, suggesting a stable, self-funded business, though no audited profit figures have been published.
Could AI replace ConvertKit / Kit?
Unlikely soon. Kit owns the subscriber list, deliverability infrastructure (99.8% claimed delivery rate), and automations that AI tools cannot replicate without owning the send pipeline. Kit itself shipped 'Kit MCP' in July 2026, letting ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini query and act on account data rather than replace the platform.
Is Beehiiv beating Kit (ConvertKit)?
Not yet on revenue: Sacra estimated Kit's ARR at $43M in 2024 versus Beehiiv's roughly $13M around its April 2024 funding round. But Beehiiv is shipping faster, launching Community, an AI Copilot, and programmatic ads in its July 2026 Summer Release, features Kit still lacks.
Who owns ConvertKit (Kit)?
Kit is privately held and founder-led by Nathan Barry, who started the company in 2013 and has raised no venture capital. A 2021 AngelList secondary valued it near $200M, and Barry reportedly turned down a roughly $200M acquisition offer around the same time, per Sacra and Founderoo reporting.
Did ConvertKit (Kit) raise prices?
Yes. Third-party reporting (Subscription Insider, March 2026) says Kit raised its base Creator plan from $29/month to $39/month, about a 34% increase, around September 2025, a move that raises near-term churn risk for the bootstrapped creator platform.
How many employees does Kit (ConvertKit) have?
Estimates vary: Built In lists roughly 85 total employees, about 40 in product and tech, fully remote across 72 cities. No official company-reported headcount has been published as of 2026, so figures should be treated as approximate.
