The call

Coursedog's installed base is hard to displace today, but Workday and Ellucian are the ones who could make that switching cost irrelevant by bundling.

Coursedog builds software that helps colleges plan courses, manage schedules, and track accreditation rules. Right now, colleges that use Coursedog are sticky because the software is wired deep into their systems and workflows, making it painful to rip out and replace. But Coursedog is not actually hard to copy: Workday Student and Ellucian (which merged with Anthology in late 2025) are enormous software companies that could bundle similar scheduling and curriculum features into their own systems at almost no extra cost, and they are simply moving slowly rather than being blocked by anything fundamental. The one thing that would change the picture is if Workday or Ellucian ship a modern scheduling module built into their main college software within the next year or two, because then Coursedog customers would have an easy way to switch without painful rip-and-replace work.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Coursedog is bolting AI onto its own product via the ClassRanked deal rather than facing an AI-native rival yet. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Workday Student and Ellucian (post Anthology merger). Both sell the base SIS most schools already pay for and could bundle a scheduling and curriculum module in at no extra cost. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep integrations with school SIS systems, configured workflows, and accreditation processes make ripping Coursedog out painful and slow.
What would change this call
Workday Student ships a bundled curriculum/scheduling module at its next customer conference. Shows the giant is closing the product gap that currently protects Coursedog.
A named Coursedog customer publicly switches to Workday Student or Ellucian within 12-18 months. Would confirm switching costs are eroding, not holding.
Coursedog discloses audited revenue or retention figures after the ClassRanked integration settles. Tests whether the vendor-claimed growth trajectory matches reality.

Questions people ask
Is Coursedog profitable in 2026?
Coursedog has not disclosed profitability or audited revenue. It raised a $90 million strategic growth investment from JMI Equity announced March 29, 2023, its largest disclosed round, but no public profit or loss data exists as of mid 2026.
Who owns Coursedog?
Coursedog is privately held and backed by growth equity firm JMI Equity, which led a $90 million strategic growth investment announced March 29, 2023, with participation from former CampusLogic CEO Gregg Scoresby.
Could AI replace Coursedog?
Coursedog's scheduling and curriculum routing features are automatable in principle, but its moat is deep SIS integrations and configured workflows across 300 to 400 plus institutions (vendor claimed, 2026), which a standalone AI tool cannot replicate without the same install base.
Who is Coursedog's biggest competitor?
CourseLeaf, founded in 1993, is Coursedog's most frequently named direct rival in curriculum and catalog software. Workday Student, a two time Gartner Leader in Higher Education SIS as of 2026, is the bigger long term threat as an adjacent giant.
Did Coursedog make any acquisitions recently?
Yes, on April 20, 2026 Coursedog acquired ClassRanked, a Duke University founded course evaluation software company, integrating it into a new Assessment Cloud product connecting AI driven course evaluations with curriculum and scheduling data.
How many colleges use Coursedog?
Coursedog states it serves 300 to 400 plus higher education institutions as of a 2026 company comparison page (vendor claimed), up from 170 plus customers disclosed on March 29, 2023 alongside its $90 million JMI Equity round.
