The call

CAA is betting that agencies, not platforms, end up owning the rulebook for how AI is allowed to use a person's face and voice.

CAA is the largest talent agency in Hollywood. It makes money by representing actors, directors, musicians, and other creative people, taking a cut of their deals. Right now, it is hard to replace because of old relationships with top talent and because California law requires a special license to be a talent agent, but that could change fast. CAA just started two new businesses (Compound Creative and theCAAvault) to control how AI companies use celebrity faces and voices. The problem: YouTube, Meta, and OpenAI are building their own systems to let creators get paid for AI copies of themselves without needing CAA in the middle, and those big tech companies might just skip the agency entirely. If courts decide that AI companies do not have to pay for using someone's likeness, then CAA's whole new AI strategy falls apart.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI Sora and similar generative video tools. Sora can synthesize a client's likeness without paying them, which is why CAA fought it publicly and now sells licensing as a service instead. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: YouTube, Meta, and OpenAI building native creator monetization and likeness tools. If platforms let creators license or block AI use of their face directly, CAA's role as the negotiating middleman gets skipped. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. California's Talent Agency Act licensing and long exclusive client ties make it hard for talent to just go direct.
What would change this call

Whether Compound Creative Holdings completes acquisitions without conflict-of-interest disputes in its first year. would show if CAA's creator-economy expansion is executing cleanly or stumbling.
Outcome of Disney/Universal v. Midjourney and Disney v. Character.AI lawsuits over likeness rights. would show whether legal enforcement backs CAA's AI-licensing moat or leaves it exposed.
