The call

Crusoe moves fast on power and permitting while its biggest customers are also the companies most able to build this themselves once the shortage eases.

Crusoe owns power plants designed to run AI data centers and has patents, land deals, and factory setups that let it build faster than Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud right now. The problem is that this speed advantage only lasts a few years, not forever. Once the shortage of AI computing power ends, the big cloud companies have the money and size to build their own plants instead of renting from Crusoe. The biggest risk is that Crusoe's biggest customers (like OpenAI and Microsoft) are also the companies most likely to build their own competing plants. When Microsoft took over OpenAI's power site in Texas in 2026, it showed customers will jump to a better deal, which means Crusoe could lose customers before its long-term contracts kick in.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI compute demand feeds Crusoe's business rather than threatening it, since labs need the power and sites it builds. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft, AWS, Google Cloud, and CoreWeave. Microsoft took over Crusoe's 900MW Abilene expansion after OpenAI walked away in March 2026, showing hyperscalers can step in directly. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Patented flare-gas capture, permitting relationships, and a 40GW+ pipeline give Crusoe a 2 to 5 year head start on building sites fast.
What would change this call
Whether Crusoe's $3B/$30B round closes in the next 6 months as reported by Bloomberg/Axios. Confirms investor confidence in Crusoe's growth story versus a stalled or down-round outcome.
Any additional hyperscaler or major tenant pulling back a committed site expansion, similar to Abilene. Would show tenant instability is spreading beyond the OpenAI/Oracle case.
Public capex or capacity announcements from CoreWeave, Nebius, or Nscale in same-size gigawatt ranges as Crusoe's pipeline. Would indicate the 2-5 year premium-pricing window is compressing faster than expected.
Key numbers
  • 4.9 GW contracted, 40+ GW pipeline (2026-06)
  • ~$3B round talks at ~$30B valuation (2026-07-02)
  • 900 MW Abilene buildout shifted to Microsoft (2026-03-26)
Named risks
  • Duration mismatch between 10-15 year fixed power leases and a 2-5 year premium pricing window. Severity: high
  • Customer concentration and volatility, evidenced by OpenAI and Oracle pulling back at Abilene in March 2026. Severity: high
  • Pending 3 billion dollar funding round at 30 billion dollar valuation remains unfinalized as of July 2026. Severity: medium
  • Regulatory and community backlash over Abilene site emissions permitted via minor permits by rule. Severity: medium
  • Hyperscaler customers are also potential replicators of Crusoe's build model once compute shortage eases. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Crusoe profitable in 2026?
No audited figures exist since Crusoe is private. Aggregator estimates range widely from about 290.7 million dollars to 998 million dollars in revenue, but Crusoe has not disclosed profitability. It raised 1.375 billion dollars at over 10 billion valuation in October 2025 and was in talks for a 3 billion dollar round near 30 billion valuation as of July 2026.
Who owns Crusoe and is it public?
Crusoe is privately held and VC backed, with no parent company. Founded in 2018 by Chase Lochmiller and Cully Cavness, it raised a Series E at over 10 billion dollar valuation in October 2025, co led by Valor Equity Partners and Mubadala Capital, with Nvidia and Fidelity also participating.
Could AI replace Crusoe's business?
No, Crusoe builds physical infrastructure such as power generation, data centers, and gigawatt scale sites, work AI models cannot perform. Its exposure is market timing risk, not automation: analysts flagged in July 2026 that its premium GPU leasing pricing window may last only two to five years before broader capacity narrows margins.
Is Crusoe's biggest competitor CoreWeave?
CoreWeave is the largest publicly listed neocloud rival, having IPO'd in March 2025 with strong Nvidia backing, per June 2025 industry reporting. Crusoe competes alongside Nebius, Nscale, Lambda and Fluidstack in a neocloud category generating an estimated 12 billion dollars per quarter as of July 2026.
Why did OpenAI walk away from Crusoe's Abilene site?
In March 2026, Oracle and OpenAI ended plans to expand their flagship 1.2 gigawatt Abilene, Texas Stargate campus with Crusoe, and Microsoft subsequently took over a new 900 megawatt AI factory buildout and on site power plant there, per Broadband Breakfast reporting dated March 26, 2026.
How much compute capacity has Crusoe contracted?
Crusoe disclosed in June 2026 that it held contracts for 4.9 gigawatts of computing power with more than 40 gigawatts in its total pipeline, according to Bloomberg reporting published July 2, 2026, while also pursuing a 3 billion dollar funding round near a 30 billion dollar valuation.
