The call

The regulatory plumbing survives inside Visa, but the Currencycloud name and team are being absorbed, not grown.

Currencycloud lets businesses send money across countries quickly. It is hard to replace because it has licenses in many countries and uses Visa's settlement network, but that advantage is becoming less special as new AI-powered payment systems from Mastercard and Amazon-Coinbase-Stripe start shipping in 2026. The real question is whether your job lands in the shrinking old team (losing 12% headcount, founders already left) or in Visa's new unified payment engine, and nobody outside seems to know which yet.

Why
01
AI pressure: Mastercard Agent Pay and AWS/Coinbase/Stripe AgentCore agentic payment rails. Agentic and stablecoin-native rails let money move without FX-markup middlemen like this business model relies on. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Visa Inc. (its own parent company). Visa is folding the brand into Visa Direct, cutting headcount and moving the surviving tech into its own core stack. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Multi-jurisdiction e-money licenses and Visa's settlement network protect the business function, even as the brand disappears.
What would change this call
Visa announces Currencycloud brand fully retired into Visa Direct naming across marketing and docs. Confirms the independent business unit is dissolved, not just rebranded.
Currencycloud headcount reported below 250 in filings or LinkedIn data by end of 2026. Shows active team contraction ahead of full consolidation.
Mastercard Agent Pay or AWS/Coinbase AgentCore signs a bank client Currencycloud previously served. Shows stablecoin/agentic rails displacing Currencycloud's FX-margin model with existing customers.

Questions people ask
Who owns Currencycloud now?
Currencycloud has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Visa Inc. since Visa completed its acquisition on 20 December 2021, having announced the deal on 22 July 2021 at a valuation of about £700m (roughly $963m).
Is Currencycloud still a separate brand or has it merged into Visa Direct?
Visa announced in October 2024 it is consolidating Visa Direct, Visa B2B Connect, Currencycloud and YellowPepper into one relaunched Visa Direct brand with a unified single API, rolling out through 2025 to 2026, and Currencycloud is now marketed as 'a Visa Direct Solution' on Visa/AWS Marketplace.
Is Currencycloud profitable?
Currencycloud does not disclose standalone financials since becoming a Visa subsidiary in December 2021; its results are consolidated into Visa Inc.'s reporting, so no independent profit or revenue figure has been publicly confirmed.
Could AI or stablecoins replace Currencycloud's cross-border FX business?
Industry commentary in 2026, including from PhotonPay, argues legacy correspondent-banking FX plumbing like Currencycloud's is poorly suited to 24/7 agent-initiated settlement, while Mastercard launched Agent Pay in June 2026 and AWS, Coinbase and Stripe launched Bedrock AgentCore Payments in May 2026 as stablecoin-native alternatives.
Who are Currencycloud's main competitors?
Direct peers in cross-border and embedded FX infrastructure include Airwallex (vendor-claimed $8B valuation and about $150B processed annually for 150,000+ businesses as of December 2025), Rapyd (which acquired Neat in 2025), and Wise, alongside newer stablecoin-native entrants.
Did Currencycloud's founders leave the company?
Yes. In March 2025 former Chief Commercial Officer John Hammond joined Railsbank, reuniting with Currencycloud co-founder Nigel Verdon and ex-CTO Nick Bourner, who had already moved to that rival embedded-finance venture.
