The call

Dave makes real money on cash advances, but a live DOJ/FTC suit over its core fee model could reshape the business that funds all of it.

Dave lends small amounts of money quickly to people who need cash before payday, and makes most of its money by charging a fee (usually five dollars or five percent of the loan). The company has trained its AI system on millions of past loans, which gives it real knowledge competitors like Chime and Earnin do not have yet, but those rivals are catching up and already have more customers using similar tools. The one thing that could wreck everything: the government's lawsuit says Dave tricks people about its fees and hasn't been honest, and if the courts agree, Dave might have to stop charging the way it does now, which would cut off most of its profits.

Why
01
AI pressure: Chime's AI-driven underwriting for SpotMe/MyPay. Chime and rivals use AI scoring to copy Dave's cash-advance model, but Dave's CashAI runs on 150M+ originations, a data edge that's hard to replicate fast. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Chase, Bank of America, Capital One. Big banks avoid direct competition here because cash advances cannibalize their own overdraft fee revenue, leaving the field to fintechs. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Regulated bank-partner rails plus a large proprietary default-prediction dataset that's costly for rivals to match.
What would change this call
Ruling or settlement in United States v. Dave, Inc. (DOJ/FTC case, Central District of California). Would show whether the $5-or-5% ExtraCash fee model, Dave's main revenue driver, must be restructured.
Coastal Community Bank fully replaces prior bank partner for ExtraCash by June 1, 2026 without service disruption. Would show Dave's bank-partner dependency did not create a funding or compliance gap.
Dave Flex (pay-in-4 card) included in FY2026 or FY2027 revenue guidance with disclosed volume. Would show Dave is diversifying revenue beyond the litigation-exposed ExtraCash fee product.

Could AI replace Dave's business model?
No, AI is Dave's engine, not its threat. Its CashAI model, trained on over 150 million historical ExtraCash originations as of September 2025, drives underwriting decisions and is cited by the company as its core moat.
