The call

Decagon is growing fast but running the same race as Sierra, Zendesk, and Salesforce, with no separation yet decided.

Decagon AI helps big companies handle customer support using artificial intelligence. The company is growing quickly and has real customers, but it is not hard to replace because competitors like Sierra offer nearly the same product, while Zendesk and Salesforce (which are much bigger) have already built their own AI agents into their existing software. The one thing that could change everything is whether Decagon can pull ahead of Sierra by getting more new customers and keeping profit margins healthy while Zendesk and Salesforce try to win deals at the same time.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI and Anthropic frontier models. Frontier labs keep shipping more capable agent APIs, letting enterprises or rivals build support bots without Decagon's layer. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Zendesk and Salesforce. Both now ship native AI agents inside suites customers already pay for, undercutting Decagon's stand-alone pitch. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep workflow integrations, proprietary support-conversation data, and in-house models trained on that data raise switching costs.
What would change this call
Decagon or Sierra publicly discloses ARR, logo count, or a head-to-head enterprise deal loss within 12 months. Shows whether Decagon is opening or losing ground in the direct race with Sierra.
Zendesk or Salesforce report AI-agent attach rates or renewal win rates among mid-market/enterprise customers. Indicates whether native suite AI is displacing standalone vendors like Decagon at renewal, not just new deals.
Decagon announces a new funding round, down round, or M&A event within 6 to 12 months. Would confirm or undercut the $4.5B valuation and in-house-model margin story.
Key numbers
  • $35M ARR (2025-11)
  • $4.5B valuation on $250M Series D (2026-01-28)
  • 100+ new enterprise logos signed (2025)
Named risks
  • Sierra, an equally-funded twin at same $4.5B valuation, competes for identical enterprise accounts. Severity: high
  • Zendesk and Salesforce shipping native AI agents could win mid-market deals at renewal. Severity: high
  • In-house model transition (80% of traffic) could fail to sustain margin defense at scale. Severity: medium
  • Headcount data conflicts sharply across sources (102 to 434 employees), signaling reporting/visibility gaps. Severity: low
  • Sector-wide regulatory scrutiny of AI decision systems could eventually extend to AI support vendors handling KYC or refund disputes. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Decagon AI profitable?
No profitability figures are disclosed. Decagon reported roughly $35M ARR as of November 2025 (vendor-claimed, per Sacra estimate), up from about $10M at end of 2024, but the company has not published net income or margin data as of March 2026.
How much is Decagon AI worth?
Decagon was valued at $4.5B in its January 2026 Series D, a $250M round led by Coatue Management and Index Ventures. A March 2026 employee tender offer let 300+ staff sell shares at that same $4.5B valuation, confirming no markdown.
Who is Decagon AI's biggest competitor?
Sierra, led by Bret Taylor, is Decagon's closest rival, also valued near $4.5B as of October 2025 and targeting the same enterprise accounts. Zendesk (~$2B ARR) and Salesforce have also shipped native AI support agents that compete for the same deals.
Could AI replace Decagon AI itself?
Decagon's product is itself the AI replacing human contact-center agents, targeting Gartner's estimated 17 million contact-center workers worldwide (as of March 2026). Decagon defends its own layer via proprietary data, deep integrations, and an in-house model shift, reportedly running about 80% of production traffic on its own models by March 2026.
Who owns Decagon AI?
Decagon is privately held, founded in August 2023 by CEO Jesse Zhang and President/CTO Ashwin Sreenivas. Investors include a16z, Accel, Bain Capital Ventures, Coatue Management, and Index Ventures, with the latter two leading the $250M Series D in January 2026 at a $4.5B valuation.
