The call

Deezer turned a profit in France while Spotify keeps taking the rest of the room, and its AI-detection tool is still a side project, not yet a business.

Deezer lets people stream music online, just like Spotify does, but it is not hard to copy or replace because music streaming is a commodity business where Spotify already built a bigger audience and better product. Spotify controls over half of France's market while Deezer has less than 9 percent, and Spotify can add the same features Deezer builds within months. The one thing that could change this is if Deezer's AI detection tool (which catches fake songs uploaded by computers) becomes so valuable that record labels, other streaming services, and businesses pay Deezer to use it, creating a separate profitable business that is not just about playing music.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI music platforms (Suno, Udio) flooding catalogs with synthetic tracks. Over half of daily uploads are now AI-generated, with much of that streaming activity flagged as fraudulent, diluting payouts to real artists. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Spotify. Spotify holds 52% of French streaming share versus Deezer's 8.8%, and keeps shipping features Deezer has no exclusive answer to. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A patent-pending AI-detection tool it can sell to other platforms, plus a newly profitable, French-anchored subscriber base.
What would change this call
Deezer's H1 2026 results, due July 28, 2026, show total subscriber count above or below 9 million. Would show whether the global subscriber decline seen in 2025 has stabilized or continued.
Deezer discloses named B2B customers or ARR figures for its AI-detection licensing product. Would show whether the AI-detection tool is becoming a real revenue business or staying a small feature.
Spotify's reported market share in France crosses 60% in future industry share reports. Would show Deezer losing further ground in its core home market to the dominant incumbent.
