The call

Degreed keeps its enterprise contracts and stays profitable, but growth has stalled while Microsoft and rivals build the same AI skills features into tools clients already pay for.

Degreed helps companies organize and recommend training courses to their employees using a skills database and AI tagging. It used to be unique, but Microsoft, LinkedIn, and Cornerstone have added similar tools directly into their main products that most big companies already use, and ChatGPT-style AI can now do much of the tagging and recommendation work on its own without needing Degreed. The company is profitable and has locked-in customers, so it is not going away soon, but it stopped growing several years ago. The one thing that could matter most is whether Microsoft finishes building learning and skills tools into its Microsoft 365 package in the next year or two, which would squeeze Degreed even harder.

Why
01
AI pressure: Microsoft Copilot / M365 Elevate, plus ChatGPT-style tutoring agents. Copilot and ChatGPT now generate skill paths and content recommendations natively, the job Degreed used to own. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft (Copilot, Viva, $4B Elevate), Cornerstone Galaxy, Docebo AgentHub. Microsoft can bundle skills intelligence free inside M365; Cornerstone and Docebo are shipping matching AI agents in 2026. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep HR system integrations and years of accumulated skills data make ripping Degreed out costly for large enterprise clients.
What would change this call
Microsoft ships native skills-intelligence layer in M365/Viva within 12 to 24 months. Would show the core feature Degreed sells is being bundled free into a suite customers already pay for.
Degreed reports revenue growth above 15% YoY in a disclosed period. Would show its AI relaunch is winning new logos, not just retaining existing accounts.
Docebo's AgentHub (GA Fall 2026) adoption reports versus Degreed's Maestro. Would show whether a same-category rival is out-executing Degreed's AI pivot.
Key numbers
  • Revenue roughly $100M, flat since 2021 (2025-11)
  • $110M round reported but unconfirmed if down-round (2025-02)
  • First-ever profitability announced (2025-01)
Named risks
  • Revenue estimates diverge nearly 3x across trackers (47.8 million to 126 million dollars), signaling opaque financials. Severity: medium
  • Microsoft bundling Copilot, LinkedIn Learning and Elevate into M365 could structurally displace standalone LXP vendors. Severity: high
  • Uncorroborated 110 million dollar Feb 2025 funding round could indicate undisclosed financial stress if confirmed as a down round. Severity: medium
  • Rivals Docebo and Cornerstone shipping near identical AI skills features on same 2026 calendar, eroding differentiation. Severity: medium
  • History of leadership churn (McCarthy to Levin to Blake) tied to acquisitions and layoffs suggests recurring instability. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Degreed profitable in 2026?
Degreed announced it achieved profitability for the first time in January 2025, alongside launching its Maestro AI coach and Skills Plus product, per the company's own January 13, 2025 statement. This is a vendor claim, not independently audited, but no contradicting report has surfaced since.
Has Degreed had layoffs?
Yes. Degreed cut about 15 percent of staff in 2022 following its Learn In acquisition. Headcount data shows further contraction from 587 employees in 2023 to a low of 478 in late 2024, before a partial rebound through 2025.
Could AI replace Degreed?
Degreed's core function, curating and tagging learning content, is being commoditized by Copilot and ChatGPT natively. Degreed's response is an MCP Server (announced October 16, 2025) feeding its skills data into Copilot, effectively ceding the interface layer to Microsoft's model.
Who owns Degreed?
Degreed is privately held, backed by venture and private equity investors including Sapphire Ventures and Riverwood Capital, which led a $153 million Series D in April 2021 valuing the company at $1.4 billion. It has never gone public or been acquired.
Who is Degreed's biggest competitor?
Microsoft is the most structural threat, having bundled LinkedIn Learning and Copilot into Microsoft 365 and launched a $4 billion Elevate upskilling initiative disclosed July 24, 2025. Cornerstone Galaxy and Docebo are also shipping near-identical AI skills features in 2026.
What is Degreed's approximate revenue?
Former CEO Chris McCarthy stated revenue was right around 100 million dollars around the time of the 2021 Series D funding round. This company-sourced figure has stayed roughly flat according to Degreed's own later statements through 2025.
