The call

A shrinking library business inside a bigger public parent, squeezed between free AI generation and better-funded rivals with stronger indemnity.

Depositphotos sells subscriptions to licensed photos that designers and marketers use in their work. It is very easy to replace because AI tools like Midjourney and DALL-E now create custom images instantly for free or cheap, and because bigger companies like Adobe, Canva, Shutterstock, and Getty already offer the same photos plus better protection if something goes wrong legally. The one thing that could save it is if Depositphotos makes a deal to let AI companies pay to train on its photo collection, which would create a new source of money that photos alone no longer provide.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI image generators (Midjourney, DALL-E, Adobe Firefly, Stable Diffusion). Traffic down 11% quarter over quarter as buyers generate images instead of licensing them, even after Depositphotos added its own AI generator in 2024. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Adobe, Canva, Shutterstock, Getty Images. Adobe bundles Firefly into Creative Cloud, Canva owns the workflow, and Getty/Shutterstock offer stronger indemnity, all live today. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Its commercially-safe, indemnified library still appeals to risk-averse business buyers who won't touch unlicensed AI output.
What would change this call
Next Cimpress earnings call mentions 'portfolio review' or 'Vista rationalization'. Would signal Cimpress is preparing to divest or wind down Depositphotos.
Depositphotos announces an AI-training-data licensing deal for its image library. Would show a pivot to a new revenue stream that offsets subscription losses.
Depositphotos raises its indemnification cap above $5K toward competitors' $10K+ levels. Would show it strengthening its weakest differentiator against Getty and Shutterstock.

Questions people ask
Who owns Depositphotos now?
Depositphotos has been a 100% owned subsidiary of Vistaprint, a Cimpress plc brand, since Cimpress acquired it for $85 million on October 27, 2021. Founder Dmitry Sergeev, who held 56%, exited management after the deal. Cimpress trades on NASDAQ as CMPR.
Is Depositphotos growing or shrinking in 2026?
Shrinking on key metrics: web traffic fell about 11% quarter-over-quarter and headcount dropped roughly 4.8% year-over-year to 316 employees as of June 19, 2026, per Crustdata, despite Depositphotos shipping new AI features that same year.
Could AI replace Depositphotos?
Yes, largely. Depositphotos' core product, licensed stock images, is directly substitutable by generative tools like Midjourney, DALL-E, Firefly and Stable Diffusion. Its main defense is a commercially-safe indemnified library, but its $5,000 indemnity cap (versus Shutterstock's $10,000, as of May 17, 2026) is weaker than rivals'.
Who is Depositphotos' biggest competitor?
Adobe Stock (bundled free in Creative Cloud with Firefly indemnity), Canva (bundles its own library into SMB design workflows), and direct peers Shutterstock and Getty Images, which has a larger 477M+ asset archive, all compete for the same shrinking stock-photo buyer pool as of 2026.
Is Depositphotos profitable?
No public profitability figures are disclosed; Depositphotos does not report separately from parent Cimpress. A third-party vendor, Datanyze, estimates current revenue at roughly $72 million, an unconfirmed modeled estimate, versus an up-to-$50 million estimate at the time of its 2021 acquisition.
Did the Getty-Shutterstock merger affect Depositphotos?
Indirectly. Getty terminated its proposed $3.7 billion merger with Shutterstock on July 7, 2026 after the UK CMA required an editorial divestiture; Shutterstock shares fell about 29-30% to a record low of $9.43, leaving both as separate rivals still competing against Depositphotos.
