The call

Derya is a two-person YC startup selling AI-run freight forwarding into a market where Flexport already ships its own AI agent and funded rivals crowd in.

Derya uses artificial intelligence to help companies quote shipping prices and coordinate freight movements, competing directly with established logistics companies like Flexport (which launched its own AI tool called Freightmate.ai) and newer startups like Haladir and Burt. The problem is that there is nothing technically difficult about copying this AI service, shipping has very thin profit margins that hurt most digital brokers, and larger companies with existing customer relationships can build similar tools themselves. The company could survive if it focuses narrowly on one specific shipping lane or industry, like marine parts between Istanbul and Shanghai, and builds deep relationships with truck drivers and carriers there, but if it tries to be a general freight broker for everyone, it will likely run out of runway within a year as bigger competitors close the gap.

Why
01
AI pressure: Flexport's Freightmate.ai and AI-forwarder peers (Haladir, Burt, Reform, Whitespace). Flexport shipped its own AI quoting agent, Freightmate.ai, closing the gap Derya's AI-native pitch relied on. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Flexport, Uber Freight, C.H. Robinson. Large forwarders like Flexport and Uber Freight already run freight tech and can add AI agents faster than Derya can win volume. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Founders' hands-on freight-ops and trucking-software backgrounds, plus early SME corridor relationships like Istanbul-Shanghai.

Named risks
  • No proven moat beyond marketing 'Brain', core AI quoting layer easily copied by incumbents and peers. Severity: high
  • Freight-financing ambition is capital-intensive and risk-bearing for a 2-person team. Severity: high
  • Category has recent history of shutdowns and down rounds (Convoy, Forto, sennder, Project44). Severity: high
  • Generalist positioning versus a defensible niche corridor leaves it exposed to 4+ funded AI logistics peers. Severity: medium
  • Core traction metrics (revenue, customers) are vendor-claimed and unaudited, no independent verification. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Derya profitable in 2026?
No profitability data is public. Derya is a 2-person, pre-seed YC S26 startup that announced a funding round led by Regional Fund III around July 6, 2026, with no disclosed revenue or profit figures beyond its own unaudited claim of managing over $3M in freight and procurement transactions.
Could AI replace Derya itself?
Ironically yes, that is Derya's own model: a 2-person team (per YC's directory, July 23, 2026) uses AI agents to do quoting, carrier sourcing and documentation that human forwarders normally do, meaning Derya's core value proposition is largely replicable by any better-funded AI-native rival like Haladir or Flexport's Freightmate.ai.
Who is Derya's biggest competitor?
Flexport is the biggest threat: it already runs a US trucking marketplace (from its ~$16M Convoy tech acquisition, November 2023) and shipped an AI product called Freightmate.ai reported in trade press by July 13, 2026, directly overlapping Derya's AI-agent forwarding pitch.
Who owns or funds Derya?
Derya is privately held and part of Y Combinator's Summer 2026 batch. Per a July 6, 2026 investor newsletter, its recent round was led by Regional Fund III with participation from Y Combinator and angel investor Umur Cubukcu; no dollar amount has been publicly confirmed.
How many employees does Derya have?
Y Combinator's own company directory lists Derya at 2 employees as of multiple snapshots between July 22 and July 25, 2026, headquartered in San Francisco, making it one of the smallest active teams in its YC batch cohort.
What has Derya raised in funding?
Derya announced an investment round led by Regional Fund III, with Y Combinator and angel investor Umur Cubukcu participating, reported around July 6, 2026. No public dollar amount or valuation has been confirmed for this round as of that date.
